Skinamarink Director To Write & Direct New A24 Horror Movie After 2023 Success

Skinamarink director Kyle Edward Ball will be writing and directing a new horror movie from A24, following the 2023 success of his uniquely produced film. Ball’s micro-budget horror movie became a major success, utilizing minimalist filmmaking techniques to tell its story. While this divided critics and audiences, with some praising the film while others found it boring to sit through, the end of Skinamarink still brought the movie together in a memorably mysterious way. It also proved the director’s talent for offering horror experiences that are outside the typical realm of terror.

Now, Variety has confirmed Ball will be directing a new horror movie for A24 following the success he had last year with Skinamarink. The new movie, titled The Land of Nod, will be produced by Central Pictures and SpectreVision, alongside Tatiana Bears and Bruno Vernaschi Berman. Executive produced by Theo Vieljeux, details for the story currently remain under wraps. So too does confirmation about how it will be filmed, and how much it’s going to pull from the director’s previous work.

What To Expect From Kyle Edward Ball’s The Land Of Nod

It Could Pull Some Inspiration From Skinamarink

In 2022, Ball expressed interest in idea for future horror films, including an adaptation of the Pied Piper, and another about three strangers dreaming of the same house. It’s currently unclear if The Land of Nod will be pulling from either of these ideas, or how inspired the film will feel from the director’s previous project. Since there’s everything from cryptic, quiet moments, to loud jumpscares in Skinamarink, the filmmaker’s upcoming movie could be a mash-up of multiple different angles of horror, telling a distinctive story in the process.

Skinamarink’s creepy antagonist is a mysterious voice that haunts the children in the movie, but the voice could represent something much darker.

The movie could also pull from some of the best A24 horror movies, such as Hereditary or The Witch, crafting a familiar storyline with Ball’s style of directing. It could also be differentiated from Skinamarink through story alone, making his cryptic filmmaking style a calling card of his movies. Since there’s no concrete information about the film aside from its title, there’s no telling what kind of horror elements will be presented. With two different ideas potentially the movie’s focus, either could have terrifying presentations when put to screen.

Our Take On Ball’s The Land Of Nod

It Probably Won’t Be Exactly Like Skinamarink

While some elements of Skinamarink will likely show up in Ball’s The Land of Nod, the movie could still pull from his previous work without relying too heavily on it. We believe doing so will help make his next horror movie stand out even more, especially if he’s able to blend a multitude of different aspects of the genre together, like he did in his previous film. With more information likely to arrive soon, it may not be long until more about his A24 venture comes to light.
