Ridley Scott Shares When He May Retire (& It’s No Time Soon)

Ridley Scott addresses when he will retire and why it will not happen soon. From Alien to Gladiator, Scott has been one of Hollywood’s most prolific and versatile directors. The acclaimed filmmaker’s career and legacy has received newfound focus leading up to the release of Gladiator II, a long-awaited sequel following up on the beloved original movie more than two decades later. The massive undertaking of Gladiator II kept Scott busy for a while, but it will not be his final movie or the end of his legendary career.

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Scott was asked if there will be a time when he stops directing. He shared that he will not stop directing until “I go,” while making a croaking noise to emphasize his point, and highlighted that “Clint [Eastwood] is 92.” It was then noted that the recently released Juror No. 2 may be Eastwood’s last movie. However, Scott emphasized that Eastwood “is f***ing 92! I’m 86 now, so I’ve still got a few to go.”

His Career Is Still Full Steam Ahead

Scott confirms that his career will not be ending or slowing down after Gladiator II‘s release. He is attached to direct multiple projects, including reuniting with Paul Mescal, who leads Gladiator II‘s cast in the role of Lucius Verus. Mescal and Scott are teaming up forThe Dog Stars, an upcoming thriller in development that is slated to begin production in 2025. In addition to The Dog Stars, Scott has already begun writing a script for Gladiator III, which will presumably see Lucius’ story continue.

In terms of the Alien franchise, Alien: Covenant may not be the end of Scott’s prequel story either, having teased ideas for how to continue the story that began in Prometheus. Gladiator III and an Alien: Covenant sequel are not officially greenlit, but both have a promising chance of happening after Alien: Romulus‘ strong box office performance and if Gladiator II also does well at the box office. Scott plans to keep making movies for the foreseeable future, which is poised to feature standalone and franchise projects.

As one of Hollywood’s best and most influential directors for decades now, it is exciting to know that Scott will continue creating new movies. His work on Gladiator II makes him an Oscars’ contender for Best Director, but Scott has never been driven by awards prestige.
