Red Dead Redemption 1 Treasure Map Guide: All 9 Treasures & Where To Find Them
With the recent rerelease of Red Dead Redemption, including a first-time PC release, many new players are getting to explore John Marston for the first time. Like Red Dead Redemption 2‘s random events, players are able to find a treasure map after saving an NPC from a bandit attack. Alternatively, they can loot the map from the NPC’s body if they are unsuccessful in saving him. Like many other encounters, this one is best found by keeping an ear out for a cry for help and investigating the situation.
Once you find the treasure cache from the first map, you’ll also loot a second map leading to the next treasure. This will repeat until you find a total of nine treasure caches, each containing a unique gold bar and the map to the next location. After finding them all, you’ll also unlock free stagecoach rides and a new equipment item.
1 How To Find Treasure Maps
X Doesn’t Mark The Spot
Like most treasure maps, it depicts a drawing of the surrounding area where the treasure can be found. The X doesn’t necessarily mark the exact spot where John can find the treasure, but it does lead players to the correct landmarks and towns in RDR. Several treasure maps also have instructions on exactly where to walk to reach the cache, so make sure to pay attention to your directions and follow them accurately.
2 First Treasure Map Location
Finding Rhode’s Gold
This treasure map shows the first location as a noose hanging from a tree next to a large boulder, shown on the map as The Hanging Rock. From there, look for a cluster of other large boulders with a small pathway between them. Follow this path and keep an eye out for a smaller, lighter-colored boulder.

With a PC port of Red Dead Redemption on the horizon, it’s a great time to think about some of the game’s best features over its prequel, RDR2.
Behind it, you’ll see a pile of gravel you can interact with to obtain the cache. After activating it, John will dig through the rocks to get your reward. You’ll retrieve the Rhode’s Gold bar and the second treasure map.
3 Second Treasure Map Location
Finding Jackson’s Gold
The next location is a bit more complex, requiring you to follow a three-step guide to carefully climb down a cliff. Just north of Del Lobo Rock along the Rio Del Lobo, you’ll find an abandoned campsite along the cliff. Very carefully, pass between the two boulders shown on the treasure map to wind your way down the cliff.
There are several areas where John can slip and fall and a precarious jump to a lower ledge. Player7 has a good YouTube video showing you exactly where to walk without falling. Be very careful, and you’ll reach the lower ledge where you can find the treasure cache. Inside, you’ll find the third treasure map and Jackson’s Gold bar.
4 Third Treasure Map Location
Finding Calhoun’s Gold
The third treasure map leads you to an abandoned house on a hill just to the West of Tumbleweed. Head around the back left side of the house, and you’ll see open cellar doors leading to the basement.
Climb the stairs and under the house, then head to the back of the room. The treasure cache will be in the middle of the far wall under the bull’s skull and will give you Calhoun’s Gold bar and the fourth treasure map.
5 Fourth Treasure Map Location
Finding Tubman’s Gold
Red Dead Redemption’s John Marston can find this treasure cache just South of the Rio Del Toro to the Northwest of Chuparosa. Follow along the path, and you’ll see a broken wall lining the north side. The cache can be found on the North side of the broken wall. If you have trouble finding it, look for a tree on the South side of the road with cow skulls hanging from it. The cache is directly across from it, behind the wall.
You can only reach this area after you’ve completed
all New Austin quests
.
Once you open it, you’ll obtain the fifth treasure map and Tubman’s Gold bar. You’ll also now reach Treasure Hunter Rank Five, which unlocks the ability to take stagecoach rides for free.
6 Fifth Treasure Map Location
Finding Brown’s Gold
The fifth treasure cache location is on the main map to the West of the Crooked Toes waypoint. Once you reach this area, you’ll see several tall rock spires clustered around one another. Climb the taller one, which has two individual rocky peaks.
You should be able to climb to the top easily by curving around the structure. Once at the top, the treasure cache will be between the two peaks. You’ll find Brown’s Gold bar and the sixth treasure map.
7 Sixth Treasure Map Location
Finding Douglass’s Gold
The sixth map leads you to the Ojo del Diablo landmark, a tall arch spanning the road. If you’re coming up from the South, look to the arch’s left side, where you’ll need to climb up to a ledge.
Once on the ledge, the cache can be found next to a single boulder, separate from the other small cluster of rocks. Here, you’ll find the seventh map and Douglass’s Gold bar.
8 Seventh Treasure Map Location
Finding Garrison’s Gold
The seventh treasure map is harder than the others, as you’ll need to approach the mountain from the West side to reach the top. Once you reach the top of the mountain, head to the East and look for a ledge sticking out below the main plateau.
You’ll be able to see the cache on the ledge before jumping. Once you locate it, hop down to the ledge and dig up the treasure. You’ll receive the eighth treasure map and Garrison’s Gold bar.
9 Eighth Treasure Map Location
Finding Pickett’s Gold
The eighth treasure is found at the Broken Tree map waypoint to the West of the Great Plains. You’ll need to have completed all the Nuevo Paraiso quests to access the West Elizabeth area. Head to the split tree, and you’ll see a normal treasure chest that you can loot.
Beyond the chest is a stone fence with several broken sections. Along the broken fence line is the treasure cache, where you’ll find Pickett’s Gold bar and the ninth treasure map.
10 Ninth Treasure Map Location
Finding Stonewall’s Gold
The final treasure cache is found in the snowy northern region, due North of Tall Trees. The treasure map shows where John will need to climb the mountains to find a cave at the top. Enter the cave, where you’ll find another regular treasure chest, and the treasure cache will be along the back wall.
Finding this final cache in Red Dead Redemption will give you Stonewall’s gold bar. However, you’ll also now reach Treasure Hunter Rank 10, which gives you the Treasure Hunter’s Satchel. This upgraded satchel allows John to carry twice as many consumable items.
