Quite A Lot Of Animosity”: Tom Holland Recalls Behind-The-Scenes Drama Making TV Show With 92% RT Audience Score

Tom Holland will be best known to most audiences for his role as Spider-Man in the MCU, and understandably so. The actor first played the iconic superhero in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, returning in two Avengers films and leading three solo movies, culminating with Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. Now, he’s set to play the character once more in the announced Spider-Man 4, but he’ll likely also be showing up in movies like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Holland, however, also has a number of titles under his belt outside of the MCU. His first major movie was actually The Impossible in 2012, and he has since appeared in movies like In the Heart of the Sea (2015), The Devil All the Time (2020), Cherry (2021), and Uncharted (2022). Holland made a major career move in 2023, starring in his first ever TV show, a limited series for Apple TV+.

Holland reveals that filming The Crowded Room
involved a fair amount of behind-the-scenes drama. Based on The Minds of Billy Milligan by Daniel Keyes, the psychological crime thriller show premiered in June 2023, with Holland playing the lead role of Danny Sullivan. The limited series follows Sullivan as he is arrested for a deadly shooting, with more about his past then being revealed through a series of interviews. Though The Crowded Room‘s reviews from critics were generally negative, the series fared far better with audiences, scoring a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

During a recent interview with Men’s Health, Holland looks back on filming The Crowded Room, recalling that it wasn’t a particularly positive on-set environment. Holland doesn’t reveal what the disagreements were about or who they involved, but he does confirm that they weren’t creative in nature, which is a kind of debate he is more open to. Ultimately, Holland, who has been open about his struggles with alcohol, reveals that he even questioned his sobriety due to the experience. Check out Holland’s comments below:

“There was quite a lot of animosity on that set. It was not a very harmonious place, and there was a lot of arguing and butting heads. I thought, If I start drinking again now, with all this going on, it’s gonna get worse, right?”

What The Crowded Room’s Reception Means For Tom Holland

The Actor Has Struggled Outside The MCU

Sometimes, projects can still succeed even if their productions don’t go smoothly. Perhaps the most infamous example of this is Apocalypse Now (1979), which, despite a grueling and controversial production, is now widely regarded as one of the best and most important Vietnam War movies ever made. The Crowded Room, however, isn’t one of these projects, and it currently has only a 33% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Though Holland’s performance is a highlight, The Crowded Room was widely criticized for being a bit of a slog to get through, and its negative reception marks an unfortunate trend for Holland. Uncharted reviews, for example, were generally negative, as were those for Cherry and Chaos Walking (2021). Outside the MCU, then, Holland’s only real win with critics as a leading man is The Devil All The Time, but even the response to that movie is somewhat lukewarm overall. Now set to star in Christopher Nolan’s next movie, though, Holland could certainly be set to change that.
