One Piece Creator Settles a Pesky Plot Hole, Teasing an Enemy’s Secret Soft Side

One of the most intriguing aspects of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is its abundance of mysteries, which continue to drive fans wild as they search for answers. While most arcs build on existing enigmas and resolve a few along the way, the Egghead Arc stands out as one of the most insightful, unraveling numerous mysteries through Vegapunk’s revelations. However, this arc also introduced a new puzzle that had left fans pondering.

During the chaos of the climactic battle in this arc, as the Straw Hats face one of the Five Elders, Saturn Jaygarcia, Luffy is left utterly exhausted after using his Gear 5 transformation. Unable to even stand due to hunger and fatigue, he repeatedly begged for food. Mysteriously, food eventually appeared for Luffy, sparking fan speculation about its source. Recently, Eiichiro Oda revealed that it was none other than Admiral Borsalino, also known as Kizaru, who provided the food.

Kizaru Is Also an Admiral Besides Fujitora Who Has a Secret Soft Side

Kizaru Provided Luffy Food During the Battle on the Egghead Island

The new One Piece volumes include a special section called SBS, where Eiichiro Oda answers fan questions, either humorously or with genuine insight. In the latest SBS, a question addressed the mystery of how Luffy suddenly received food during the battle on Egghead Island. While Oda doesn’t explicitly state that Kizaru provided the food, the hints and descriptions he uses clearly point to Kizaru as the one responsible.

One Piece Confirms Shanks Is Roger’s True Successor And Not Luffy

Though fans have long assumed Luffy was Gol D. Roger’s successor, Shanks is actually a more qualified candidate.

Oda mentions that only someone with the speed of light could have accomplished this feat, emphasizing the phrase multiple times. Since Kizaru is the only character with a Devil Fruit that allows him to become light and harness its properties, it’s clear that Oda is referring to him. Kizaru, the second Admiral introduced in the series, made a brutal impact by sabotaging the Straw Hat crew during the Sabaody Arc. However, his actions in Egghead, particularly his decision to aid Luffy, hint at a hidden soft side and even suggest the possibility of him betraying the World Government.

Kizaru Has More Reason Than Anyone To Betray the World Government

One Piece Manga panels from chapter 1124 show Admiral Kizaru Crying and scolding Fleet Admiral Sakazuki as Egghead burns in the background.

The Egghead Arc was rich with flashbacks, particularly poignant stories about Kuma and Vegapunk. These backstories revealed that Kizaru and Sentomaru were deeply connected to Vegapunk and Kuma, considering them friends. Kizaru’s role in fighting Vegapunk, even inflicting a fatal wound that leads to his death, and opposing Sentomaru, whom he views as family, provide compelling reasons for his actions. These emotional conflicts likely drove Kizaru to aid Luffy, ultimately turning the tide of the battle in the Straw Hats’ favor.

Kizaru has always adhered to the “Unclear Justice” principle, a concept left open to interpretation. However, his actions in this arc suggest that he is willing to betray the World Government if it means protecting those he cares about. With Vegapunk’s revelations exposing the darker side of the World Government, Kizaru may already be contemplating his betrayal. This is further evidenced by his outburst at Akainu, the Fleet Admiral, where he expresses deep regret for his actions against his friend.

It’s unfortunate that such pivotal information was revealed in SBS rather than through a flashback after the battle, which could have further cemented Kizaru’s character development and his potential betrayal of the World Government. However, if Kizaru does turn against the World Government in the future of One Piece, fans shouldn’t be surprised, as the groundwork for this possibility has already been laid by showcasing his softer side and hinting at his transformation from enemy to ally.
