Nightwing #119 officially introduces a new creative team, with Dan Watters, Dexter Soy, Veronica Gandini, and Wes Abbott taking over from Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo. This issue is significant for several reasons, but two stand out: the debut of Nightwing’s latest foes.

Despite appearing in the first three pages of Nightwing #119, the meta-clown doesn’t reappear until the final moments, where it’s revealed that he and Olivia are in cahoots. The two villains observe Nightwing through security feeds as he battles the laser-shooting security system of Spheric Solutions. The clown draws attention to the “mark” on Dick’s chest, saying, “A curious mark for a circus boy to wear… For the circus has its own language. Its own code and beliefs, which all stem from us. So tell us, faithful servant of the cirque du sin… what does a bird in the circus tent mean?” Olivia responds, “A bird means death.”

This exchange imbues Nightwing’s symbol with the ominous meaning of ‘death’ while also marking him for that fate. One could interpret this moment as the villains believing that Dick sealed his own doom the moment he donned his Nightwing persona. This inference is further supported by the clown’s earlier narration, revealing that he and a mysterious group have been watching Dick since his boyhood and that when he became Robin, “…it was then that [they] knew he was [theirs].” Thus, for reasons yet to be unveiled, Dick’s heroic journey has marked him for death.
