How To Build A Research Institute In Frostpunk 2

Research in Frostpunk 2 is an important component of the game, and you will be tasked to build a Research Institute very early in the game. However, the game makes no mention of how to do this or where to go, so you will normally have to figure this out on your own. Luckily, this guide will tell you everything you need to know about how to get your Research Institute as quickly as possible.

There is a lot of good tech to research in Frostpunk 2, but you cannot conduct research until you have the proper facilities. Research is also key due to its influence over the trust the factions have in you. This is a very early part of the game, and you do not want to get too frustrated at this point and ruin the experience. However, it is much easier once you know the first steps you need to take to build the institute.

Building The Research Institute In Frostpunk 2

Opening A Building Slot

As this is one of your first quests in the game post-prologue, you will be looking for a way to build a Research Institute in Frostpunk 2 right away. This will help you begin to keep your city from getting cold. However, first what you will want to do is build a Housing District on the edge of your city. You cannot build a Research Institute without it. After that, you will then have to continue working on that Housing District and expand it.

To do so, click on the Housing District and press the button at the very bottom right, which looks like four arrows pointing away from each other. You can see this button in YouTuber JavierHowTo’s video, and after you click this and successfully expand the district, you will be given an extra housing slot. From there, go to the bottom right corner of your screen, and find the icon that says “Construct Buildings.”

If you click on it, Research Institute should pop up and be one of the few options you have this early in the game. Click on it, and look for a black pulsing circle near the Housing District you built. Put the Research Institute into the black circle and place it, which will then kick off the building time. Once it’s completed, you can then start doing research.

You can make laws in Frostpunk 2 to increase the speed of research. In the meantime, to use this new building, you can go back to the bottom right of your screen and click the icon labeled “Idea Tree,” which will allow you to fulfill your next goal to research how to increase coal production in Frostpunk 2.
