Happy Gilmore 2 Story Update Confirms Flashback Scenes Will Include Original Characters De-Aged
Returning Happy Gilmore 2 star Julie Bowen confirms the upcoming sequel will include flashbacks with de-aged characters. Following on from Adam Sandler’s hit 1996 comedy, Netflix’s Happy Gilmore 2 is set to reunite Bowen with her former co-stars Sandler and Christopher McDonald. Meanwhile, new Happy Gilmore 2 cast additions include musical artist Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasió, otherwise known as Bad Bunny, and Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers, The Substance).
Speaking with Collider, Bowen was asked about her return to the role of Virginia Venit. Describing the experience of filming Happy Gilmore 2 as “really weird,” Bowen even revealed that she was also required to wear her original clothing and hair for flashback scenes in which she will be de-aged. Check out her comments below:
It is really weird. This is not a spoiler, but because there are flashbacks, they have to put me in the hair and the clothes from then, which are not my faves. It’s fun because they also get to de-age me, which I’ve never gotten done. I’m like, ‘Cool, I can’t wait to see what that is.’ There’s a lot of really fun stuff. And seeing Adam [Sandler] and Chris [McDonald], and even some of the crew was the same. Adams is such a loyal, lovely person to work with, and he loves to take the people along with him from the get-go. Perry [Andelin Blake], our production designer, has been with him since Happy Gilmore, and he looks exactly the same.
What The Inclusion Of Flashback Scenes Means For Happy Gilmore 2
Audiences Will Be Keen To Learn What Happened After The First Movie
Throughout his decades-long film career, Sandler has produced and starred in dozens of movies and portrayed just as many unique leading characters. However, few of Sandler’s characters are as memorable or beloved as Happy Gilmore, the aspiring hockey player whose unconventional long drive sees him join the pro-golfing ranks. Often ranked alongside 1995’s Billy Madison as one of Sandler’s best comedic roles, this new belated sequel certainly has a high bar to live up to.
With almost 30 years between the first movie and the new Netflix sequel, fans of the original Happy Gilmore will likely be keen to learn what happened to Virginia and McDonald’s Shooter McGavin in the years since Happy won the tour championship jacket and saved his grandmother’s home. Thankfully, this latest revelation would suggest audiences will be shown exactly what happened, rather than relying on extensive exposition dumps. Moreover, the original movie even provides Happy Gilmore 2 with the perfect means to bring audiences up to speed.
Our Take On How Happy Gilmore 2’s Flashbacks Will Be Used
Happy Gilmore 2 Could Recycle A Trick From The First Movie
The first movie opens with Sandler’s character narrating his childhood history, and enduring love for hockey, over the top of old home movies. While it is not clear whether Sandler will have other plans in mind for the flashback scenes in Happy Gilmore 2, opening the sequel with a similar sequence would be the perfect way to call back to the first movie. Potentially charting his character’s history and relationship with Bowen’s Virginia since winning the championship jacket, opening Happy Gilmore 2 with another collection of Happy’s personal memories would be the ideal way to use these latest flashback scenes.
