GODZILLA VS AMERICA: New Series Sends The Kaiju on A Path of Destruction Across The USA

Next year, Godzilla will embark upon a tour of destruction across the United States, in a new miniseries from IDW Publishing appropriately entitled Godzilla vs. America. As revealed by the publisher, the midwestern metropolis of Chicago is the first on the King of Monsters’ list of stops to make – but far from the last.

At this year’s New York Comic-Con, IDW announced Godzilla vs. America, starting with Godzilla vs. Chicago. As of now, specifics about the series are scarce, but what fans do know makes this a massively anticipated project for next year.

Godzilla vs. America will be an anthology book, with multiple stories per issue – and each issue will be crafted by authors and artists who actually live in the city that Godzilla is ravaging. The creative team for the Chicago issue includes Caroline Cash, Mike Costa, Tim Seely, and more.

What makes Godzilla vs. America an effective premise is that it offers a range of new locations for the franchise. The King of Monsters’ time ravaging major U.S. targets has been surprisingly limited. Godzilla has attacked New York several times, and cities like Honolulu and San Francisco at least once, he has rarely, if ever, ventured into the Midwest – making Chicago the perfect place to kick off IDW Publishing’s new series. By recruiting Chicago residents for the creative team behind the issue, IDW has ensured that the city will be depicted faithfully – and destroyed with great affection.

Fans of the franchise can now excitedly speculate about more than just which city will face the wrath of Godzilla next – they can begin to fantasy cast dream creative teams for different cities, based on writers and artists who live in places such as Atlanta, Austin, Detroit, Los Angeles, and more. Readers from these cities and adjacent areas will be especially drawn to the novelty of witnessing Godzilla smash a familiar setting, particularly given the fidelity that local creators will bring to the series.

In addition to Godzilla vs. America, IDW Publishing also announced the equally intriguing Godzilla: Heist series, in which a group of thieves attempt to pull off a major job in the midst of a Godzilla attack on Las Vegas – adding another novel U.S. location to the list of those the King of Monsters will attack next year. In addition to that, IDW is putting out a Mothra series, which will make the eponymous creature – arguably the franchise’s second most legendary kaiju – the star of her own story.

That said, Godzilla vs. America is the most exciting of these projects, because of the opportunity it is going to provide for a wide range of creatives to make a unique mark on the franchise, and to tell classic Godzilla tales in a fresh context. Even just judging from the two covers for Godzilla vs. Chicago that have been released so far, the series promises a thrilling integration of each city’s landmarks and culture into the familiar framework of a Godzilla rampage.

IDW’s New Godzilla Series Makes The Iconic Kaiju Dangerous Again

Another thing that is particularly notable about IDW’s new series Godzilla vs. America, and Godzilla: Heist, is how both series consciously seem committed to making the original kaiju a dangerous force of nature once more. Over the years, Godzilla has more and more frequently been an ally of humanity – something that is especially prevalent in the franchise’s comics. While that is a fun, engaging dynamic in its own right, stories in which Godzilla is a lumbering, devastating threat to human civilization are fundamental to the character’s existence.

I Never Knew Godzilla Continuity Had Kaiju That Are THIS Gigantic (But Now I Want More)

As a Godzilla fan, I was shocked by the appearance of the supermassive Magira in the comics, but now I want more Super-Kaijus from the franchise.

Godzilla vs. America seems poised to deliver on this premise in spectacular ways, as Godzilla does his worst to cities all around the country. Given the chance, the series will highlight what has made the franchise endure for decades, while uniquely showcasing the country’s urban centers. IDW Publishing has already proven repeatedly that comics are an exceptional medium for telling Godzilla stories, and this innovative new series is further testament to the publisher’s exciting commitment to the King of Monsters.
