Echoes Of Wisdom Might Explain A Big Connection To This Classic Zelda Game

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom makes a lot of changes to gameplay compared to other titles in the series, particularly by putting Zelda in the leading role without the classic sword and shield combination to fight evil. As the most recent game in a long-running franchise, there are plenty of references to previous titles scattered throughout the game’s world. However, one reference seems to explain the setting of a classic Zelda game.

Echoes of Wisdom borrows Link’s Awakening’s remake style in terms of design. But this time, Zelda takes the position of hero instead of Link. While Echoes of Wisdom makes some changes when it comes to gameplay, it keeps the heart of what makes the franchise beloved alive. Additionally, one piece of the game’s lore seems to answer some questions about a Zelda game that’s over two decades old now.

Why Rifts May Connect To Majora’s Mask

How Hyrule And Termina Are Linked

A large part of Echoes of Wisdom’s plot revolves around Rifts, which are connections to another world that seems to be populated by evil versions of people living in Hyrule, which is shown through the king imprisoning Zelda or Zelda fighting Dark Link.

The way that Rifts are used in Echoes of Wisdom makes them the perfect answer to the lingering question in Majora’s Mask about why Termina is full of characters who are identical to people in Hyrule. If the Rifts connect two similar worlds, then it’s possible that not every Rift leads to a location with dark versions of characters.

23 Years Later, The Biggest Zelda: Majora’s Mask Mystery Is Still Unanswered

A big follow-up to Ocarina of Time never actually gets addressed with Majora’s Mask, this needs to be resolved with another sequel to the game.

Majora’s Mask is considered something of an oddity in Zelda canon. The game is remarkably dark and bleak compared to other entries in the franchise, with a heavy focus on death, despair, loss, and the passage of time. Despite its heavy themes, it’s considered one of the best Zelda games by many, with its haunting stories often cited as being the most memorable.

The Power Of Dimensional Rifts

Seeing how the Rifts link Hyrule to an alternate version of Hyrule, it wouldn’t be a stretch to believe that Rifts are also the way that Hyrule is linked to Termina in Majora’s Mask. Additionally, Lueberry explains why Link doesn’t talk in Echoes of Wisdom: because everybody who falls into a Rift has something taken from them, and in this case, it was his voice. In Majora’s Mask, it’s possible that the Rift took away Link’s chance to find Navi, which was the purpose of his journey away from Hyrule.

There are so many references to Ocarina of Time in Echoes of Wisdom that it’s difficult not to believe that the games are linked in some way, and Majora’s Mask taking place almost directly after the events of OoT. Specifically, it seems like Echoes of Wisdom is set in the timeline prior to Ocarina of Time, and that would line up well if Rifts were truly the way that Link traveled from Hyrule to Termina. However, it’s unlikely that this theory will be confirmed in any game that comes after The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.
