Though news regarding the western series had slowed to a trickle throughout the middle of 2024, that latest update confirms that Billy the Kid season 3 is happening and will be the last. According to Deadline, MGM+ opted to renew the series around four months after the sophomore season’s second half went off the air. Furthermore, the final season will give the most watched series in MGM+ history a chance to end conclusively, recreating the final days of the titular character. In the announcement of Billy the Kid season 3, MGM+ laid out exactly what’s at stake in the final season. However, while McCarty was a real figure the show isn’t a direct biopic, and some flourishes might be added to the outlaw’s eventual demise. With that said, season 3 will pick up after season 2’s daring finale where Dulcinea helped Billy escape from Sheriff Pat Garrett. Hellbent on revenge, Garrett will hound Billy to the ends of the Earth, and he is determined to capture the outlaw, dead or alive.

What remains to be seen is how the show will tackle the blood-soaked ending, and if any changes will be made to the story. Billy the Kid has often proven itself to be more of an artistic interpretation of Billy’s life, but the conclusion is perhaps what is best known about the short-lived western folk icon.
