Bianca’s Backstory & Powers In Wednesday Explained

Bianca Barclay (Joy Sunday) is one of Wednesday‘s most important characters, with both her backstory and powers being important elements of the Netflix series. When introduced in season 1, Bianca already had a reputation of being one of the most popular students at Nevermore Academy and became a rival of Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega). However, Bianca and Wednesday gradually put aside their differences and began to trust and respect each other, and even worked together during Wednesday season 1’s ending.

Some of the tension between Bianca and Wednesday in season 1 was due to Xavier Thorpe (Percy Hynes White). He and Bianca previously dated, while Xavier became interested in Wednesday, although Wednesday did not feel the same way about him. Both Sunday and Ortega reprise their roles as Bianca and Wednesday in season 2, which will likely explore more of their newfound friendship. Bianca will continue to be an important part of Wednesday season 2’s story, building on what was revealed about her backstory and powers in season 1.

Bianca’s Siren Powers In Wednesday Explained

She Has Psychic Manipulation And Transformation Powers

Like her mother and her ancestors before her, Bianca is a siren, who is able to use her siren song to convince others to think, feel, or act in a certain way. Those on the receiving end of her persuasive siren song are usually unaware that they are being manipulated, which helps make sirens the most powerful outcast species at Nevermore Academy. When Bianca uses her manipulative abilities, this is shown through magenta-colored sound waves being emitted. Bianca wears a necklace that helps her control this siren song.

Bianca’s fellow siren, Kent, used the mermaid form to wreak havoc on the other teams’ boats during Nevermore Academy’s Poe Cup through a plan that Bianca created. Season 1 did not show Bianca fully transformed as a mermaid, although scales could be seen on her when playing with the fountain water on Nevermore Academy’s campus.

Before she was Bianca Barclay at Nevermore Academy, she was a young siren named Brandy Jane, whose mother was part of a cult known as Morning Song. While it is advertised as a self-help community and app, Morning Song is actually a scam. Bianca’s mother, Gabrielle (Gracy Goldman), uses her siren song to manipulate others to give money to Morning Song and its leader, Gideon, who Gabrielle later married. The expectation was that Bianca would use her siren powers for Morning Song as well.

Bianca rejected this path and wanted her own life that did not involve Morning Song and using her powers in such a nefarious way. She ran away from her mother and from Morning Song, instead taking on the name Bianca Barclay and beginning a new life at Nevermore Academy. Despite charting a new course for herself, Bianca still used her siren song for manipulative means at times, including using it to get enrolled at Nevermore Academy, a secret that is not known by most of Wednesday‘s characters.

Before Wednesday’s arrival, Bianca was considered the undisputed queen among Nevermore Academy’s student population. She proved to be a natural leader who others looked up to and admired, including among her fellow sirens and in the Nightshade Society. Bianca was also unparalleled when it came to her fencing skills and was not truly challenged by any opponent until she faced Wednesday.

The breakup had already taken place before Wednesday began her education at Nevermore Academy, but its effects carried into the series, and contributed to the jealousy Bianca felt toward Wednesday in season 1.

The cracks in Bianca’s facade began to form when Xavier broke up with her, as he could not trust whether he genuinely liked her or if she was using her siren song on him to make him feel this way.
