Ariana Grande Reveals What Classic Adam Sandler Movie Makes Her Cry Every Time
Wicked star Ariana Grande has become renowned for her tearful interviews, but she claims one Adam Sandler movie never fails to make her cry. A former Nickelodeon child star and pop sensation, Grande recently wowed audiences as the Good Witch of the South, Glinda, in 2024’s record-breaking adaptation of the Wicked stage musical. Throughout the movie’s promotional efforts, Grande and co-star Cynthia Erivo became renowned for their emotion-filled interviews, prompting a slew of memes and viral reaction videos.
The frequency with which both actors had been brought to tears while promoting Wicked was not lost on either star. During one such interview, Grande even headed off prospective critiques of her propensity for crying, claiming, “I’ll say it first. I’m annoyed, I’m tired. My tear ducts [are tired].” Nonetheless, both stars remained resolute that their reaction was the natural culmination of a three-year-long journey during which both had formed a strong behind-the-scenes bond.
One Of Adam Sandler’s Most Divisive Characters Also Brings The Wicked Star To Tears
Adam Sandler’s 1998 Movie Was Not Beloved By All
While the emotional roller-coaster of Wicked’s ground-breaking journey to the big screen may have been enough to prompt Grande’s tearful appearances, the singer and actor was recently asked if any other movies were known to make her cry. Speaking with W Magazine, Grande named Sandler’s 1988 comedy The Waterboy as the film that never fails to bring her to tears. Check out her comments below:
The Waterboy, with Adam Sandler, makes me cry. When they’re mean to Bobby Boucher, I cry. I don’t like it. I love Bobby Boucher. He says, “Would you please still be my friend?” and I lose it. But I cry at everything.
While Grande can’t help but be affected by Sandler’s turn as the socially inept Bobby Boucher, critics were nowhere near as kind about the comedian’s 1998 outing. Despite The Waterboy’s $190 million worldwide box office haul dwarfing the takings of his previous comedic outings, the movie’s initial critical responses were decidedly mixed. Earning him both a nomination for the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actor and a Stinkers Bad Movie Award for Most Annoying Fake Accent, the initial responses to Bobby Boucher were far from kind.
Our Take On Ariana Grande’s Love For The Waterboy
The Wicked Star Would Make An Excellent Cameo For A Potential Sequel
Despite critics failing to appreciate The Waterboy in the same way as general audiences, Grande’s comments suggest that the affection for Sandler’s over-the-top performance as Bobby Boucher continues to this day. Frequently ranked among his best-known characters, there is still considerable interest in seeing Sandler reprise his role for a potential sequel.

Farmer Fran is a minor character in the Adam Sandler sports comedy The Waterboy but he’s hilarious in his few scenes in this and similar movies.
If Sandler were indeed intent on returning as the lovable Bobby Boucher for The Waterboy 2, perhaps he may even be able to approach Grande for a cameo. Given that the comedian has already lined up recognizable names like Travis Kelce, Eminem, and Bad Bunny for his forthcoming return in Happy Gilmore 2, there’s no reason why he could not potentially approach Grande for an emotion-filled cameo in a potential return to The Waterboy.
