There are scenes, however, where the background lighting and its level of brightness can either make the uniforms look more purplish or even a dark shade of red.

Season 1 revealed that some of the guards are incredibly young and none are allowed to remove their masks and reveal their identity to the players. If they do disclose their identities, they will be shot dead.

Through Park Gyu-young’s character, No-eul, Squid Game season 2 shows how, like the players, the guards, too, are carefully recruited by the game’s organizers. No-eul, hired as Guard 011, was a North Korean deserter who somehow made it to South Korea without her family. She was desperate to rescue her daughter, which allowed the games’ Officer to exploit her helplessness and hire her as one of the guards. In Squid Game season 2’s opening moments, however, No-eul loses hope that she will ever find her daughter and begins her own little battle against the dark games.

One of the most popular online phenomenons that left people divided revolved around the color of a dress (via Wired). After a person posted a picture of a dress and asked people about the color they saw, many suggested they saw a blue dress. At the same time, many also claimed they could see a golden dress. It was later deduced that the dress’ color depended on the conditions under which a person saw it. Under more relatively bright, natural lighting, the dress appeared to be a brighter shade, which could explain why some viewers also perceived the guards’ uniforms differently in certain scenes.

Neuroscientists also joined the dress debate, drawing on many scientific theories about how many factors can influence how one sees color. A study even concluded that one’s perception of the dress’ color had more to do with how different regions of the brain were activated in different individuals when they processed visual information and interpreted light.
