Alien: Romulus 2 Theory Reveals Fede Alvarez’s Sequel Repeats The Franchise’s Biggest Villain Story (With A Hero)

Alien: Romulus 2 may be on the way, and this theory regarding Fede Álvarez’s Alien sequel shows that the movie may repeat the franchise’s biggest villain story – but this time with a hero. Although Alien: Romulus takes place after the original Alien movie, the film features some connections to Ridley Scott’s series of Prometheus prequels, with the film finally linking the two sagas together. The success of Alien: Romulus has made a sequel inevitable, but the ending of Alien: Romulus highlights how this sequel may be even scarier than its predecessor.

After the major success of the 2024 film, an Alien: Romulus sequel is already being discussed by Fede Álvarez and 20th Century Studios, meaning that the iconic sci-fi horror franchise will continue on into the future. While nothing is official, story ideas have been discussed, and the studio is attempting to get Fede Álvarez back to work on the new film. While there are all kinds of possibilities for what the story of a potential Alien: Romulus 2 could be, the most obvious one is incredibly dark, with it painting a bad picture for Rain and Andy’s futures.

An Alien: Romulus Sequel Has To See Rain & Andy Go To Yvaga

After The Ending Of Alien: Romulus

If an Alien: Romulus sequel does happen, then the movie has to see Rain and Andy go to Yvaga III. Throughout the first Alien: Romulus movie, getting to Yvaga III was the main goal of Rain and Andy. Alien: Romulus‘ Yvaga III was painted as a paradise full of lush natural landscapes and wildlife, with the most notable thing about the planet being the complete absence of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. Although Rain had never been to Yvaga III, she believed that it was the answer to all of her problems, leading to the story of Alien: Romulus.

The main story of Alien: Romulus follows the cast attempting to steal some cryosleep pods that they can use to make the journey to Yvaga III, showing how much trouble they were willing to go through to reach the planet. Although most of the crew died during the events of the film, Rain and Andy were able to successfully escape the Romulus space station on a ship headed for Yvaga III. Alien: Romulus concludes with the duo en route to Yvaga III, and while they haven’t reached it yet, Alien: Romulus will undoubtedly pick up with their Yvaga arrival.

Rain & Andy May Destroy Yvaga In Alien: Romulus 2

Thanks To The Black Goo

Although it wouldn’t be intentional, Rain and Andy may destroy Yvaga III upon their arrival in Alien: Romulus 2. Rain and Andy aren’t the only important things on the ship that is headed to Yvaga III, as it also contains the vials of black goo from Prometheus. This black goo has already been shown to be incredibly dangerous, with it destroying almost anything that it touches throughout Prometheus, Alien: Covenant, and Alien: Romulus. This was set up with the laboratory scene in Alien: Romulus, showing how it evolves small animals to the point of death.

If the black goo gets loose on Yvaga III, it could absolutely decimate the planet, destroying the paradise that Rain and Andy believe that they are going to. Since Yvaga III doesn’t have any Weyland-Yutani presence, the planet probably doesn’t have a way to fight back against the black goo. Thus, Andy and Rain arrival on the planet could be a death sentence due to the stowaway scientific experiment.

This isn’t just speculation. In fact, Fede Álvarez has already teased this Alien: Romulus sequel story. When talking about what Rain and Andy could get up to in a sequel, the director teased that Yvaga III may turn out to be not what it seems. Instead, he thinks that Rain and Andy could discover that Yvaga III is a “terrible place,” although it isn’t known if this is due to the destruction by the black goo or the fact that Yvaga III is already a terrible place. For me, it’s always been about story. So, once we finished, we started thinking, “What do you think happens when or if they get to your Yvaga? Is it going to be great? Or is it a terrible place?” We tend to believe it’s probably a terrible place that
they
think is great and fantasize about, so we naturally started thinking about where it goes and what’s going to happen. And then, a few minutes in, we go, “Oh, that sounds like a sequel.”

Rain & Andy’s Destruction Of Yvaga Would Repeat David’s Alien: Covenant Story

He Destroyed The Engineer Home Planet With The Black Goo

Having Rain and Andy destroy Yvaga III with the black goo would be an interesting parallel in the Alien franchise, with it repeating David’s Alien: Covenant story. Michael Fassbender’s David is a synthetic who was first introduced in Prometheus, with him turning out to be a villain who is obsessed with creating the perfect being. Through using the black goo, David hopes to create an incredibly dangerous monster, with the product of these experiments being a predecessor of the Alien franchise’s iconic Xenomorph.

Alien: Covenant reveals that, after the events of Prometheus, David managed to travel to the planet of the Engineers. Upon his arrival, David released the black goo, with it taking over the planet and destroying it. It caused a disease that killed all of the Engineers while also completely terraforming the planet, with it even creating monsters out of the wildlife that withstood the goo’s influence. While David intended to do this, Rain and Andy’s destruction of Yvaga III would likely follow a similar path, making them David’s spiritual successors.

Alien: Romulus’ Yvaga Story May Continue The Franchise’s Best Prometheus Future

Paralleling The Prequels Without Directly Continuing Their Stories

Having this Yvaga III story parallel David’s Alien: Covenant plan is smart, as it continues the franchise’s best Prometheus future. The Prometheus prequels have always been controversial, and while they have their fans, they aren’t as beloved as the mainstream Alien movies. Since the Prometheus movies are so lore-heavy, it is difficult to intertwine them with the mainline Alien movies in a way that works for viewers who haven’t seen Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. However, Alien: Romulus found the right balance.

Alien: Romulus is a stand-alone film and takes place in a time not yet explored in the Alien franchise.
