1 Wind And Truth Cosmere Cameo Is A Great Reminder To Read This 2023 Brandon Sanderson Fantasy Book

As one of the central narratives in the Cosmere fantasy universe, The Stormlight Archive has become more integrated with Sanderson’s other series and standalone novels with each installment. Wind and Truth is packed with Cosmere character mentions and cameos, including the character Ulaam, who was first introduced in Mistborn.

Wind and Truth’s ending sees Hoid (Wit) get vaporized by Retribution, the newly formed combination of Odium and Honor’s Shards. Though his body is destroyed, he awakes shortly after on Scadrial, having been regenerated through some technology. Hoid awakens to see Ulaam, who reveals that they’re in his laboratory and that they had planned together for an instance where Hoid might need to recover his body using a cell culture left behind on the Mistborn planet.

Ulaam Is On The Crew Of The Crow’s Song In Sanderson’s Swashbuckling Adventure

Ulaam may have first been introduced in The Lost Metal, but his main story so far has been in 2023’s Tress of the Emerald Sea, one of Brandon Sanderson’s Secret Project books. Throughout the novel, the main protagonist, Tress, becomes part of a pirate ship called the Crow’s Song. Hoid, who also narrates the story, is part of the ship’s crew, though he’s under a curse and not capable of being as cogent as he typically is. Because of the curse, Hoid requested Ulaam come to the planet Lumar, who also joined the ship’s crew as its surgeon.

Without spoiling much of Tress of the Emerald Sea’s narrative, Ulaam is a fantastic supporting character among the vibrant cast Sanderson assembles. Ulaam is often played for laughs, but he’s undoubtedly a dignified character with a broader knowledge of the Cosmere. Overall, it’s one of Sanderson’s most whimsical, enchanting tales, and though it may not be as epic or consequential to the Cosmere as The Stormlight Archive, it still explores facets of Sanderson’s fantasy universe that readers will find worthwhile.

Kandra Are A Shapeshifting Species From Scadrial

Before Tress of the Emerald Sea, Ulaam appeared in The Lost Metal, where he was introduced as a kandra alongside TenSoon and Melaan. Kandra are a species from Scadrial created by The Lord Ruler who are capable of shapeshifting. Their abilities require their shapeshifting target to be dead so that they can utilize their bones to take on their form. Given their shapeshifting, Sanderson has teased that kandra worldhoppers have been present in The Stormlight Archive, leading fans to speculate on who it might be.
