Could the Dodgers still make another blockbuster move before spring training?

If you think the Los Angeles Dodgers have reached the limit on superstars on their roster heading into the 2025 campaign, brace yourself. It’s possible the defending World Champions may still add to their already insane amount of talent through a blockbuster deal.
According to MLB.com’s John Denton, the St. Louis Cardinals have “reengaged” the Los Angeles Dodgers in trade talks around All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado. The 33-year-old Arenado is a native of Southern California and, according to Denton, “would prefer a trade to a contending team over remaining with the rebuilding club (Cardinals).”
Denton also mentions the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox as teams with which the Cardinals have reengaged on trade talks for Arenado.
Here’s what Denton wrote:
“A sticking point in any Arenado deal could come down to how much of the $64 million remaining on Arenado’s contract the Cardinals are willing to absorb. Initial trade talks in early January broke down when the Cardinals refused to pay as much as $20 million toward the balance of Arenado’s contract, a source said. After failing to make much trade progress elsewhere throughout January, the Cardinals reengaged the Red Sox, Yankees and Dodgers about possible restructured deals for the star third baseman.”
Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said back in January that trading Arenado was “priority one, two and three” as St. Louis continues to look for ways to shed payroll ahead of the 2025 campaign.
While Arenado still remains with the club at the time of this writing, it’s clear that his tenure with St. Louis has been disappointing. Traded from the Colorado Rockies to St. Louis before the start of the 2021 season, Arenado has never won a postseason game with St. Louis as his club was swept out of the wild-card rounds in 2021 and 2022.
Arenado has also seen his production dip over the last two seasons, posting OPS+ numbers of 108 and 101, respectively, during that span. His career average OPS+ sits at 120 heading into the 2025 season.
If the Dodgers were to acquire Arenado, it could set off an interesting chain of events inside Chavez Ravine. Max Muncy is penciled in as the starting third baseman in Los Angeles at present, and Shohei Ohtani is expected to once again hold down the team’s designated hitter duties. However, Muncy could, in theory, be shifted to second base (where he has played in 186 games during his nine-year MLB career) with new acquisition Hyeseong Kim then moved into a full-time utility role.
Could the Dodgers land Arenado in a blockbuster deal? In an offseason where Los Angeles has already surprised with some signings and the money that has come along with them, it certainly seems to be a real possibility.
