Anthony Davis on LeBron James’ triple-double vs. Kings: ‘He never ceases to amaze any of us’

LeBron James posted his first triple-double of the season, including 16 points in the fourth quarter, as the Los Angeles Lakers improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2010-11 with a 131-127 defeat of the Sacramento Kings on Saturday night at Crypto.com Arena. James finished with 32 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. All three marks were season highs for the 39-year-old in his 22nd season. “Just when you think he’s slowing down, man, he continues to show the world why he’s the greatest,” Anthony Davis said of James’ performance. “To go on that stretch, he actually looked to the bench and was trying to come out the game. We told him, ‘You’re not coming out.’ He comes out and hits another 3. He never ceases to amaze any of us because we just know what he’s capable of.”

LeBron said with an MVP candidate in AD, and many talented offensive teammates like Reaves, Russell and Hachimura, the team isn’t built for him to need to score 16 in a quarter like he did in the 4th all the time. But, clearly, when it’s needed, he can still get to another level. – 1:25 AM

More on this storyline

“Listen, I could do that at 22, but at almost 40, I don’t need to be doing it for four quarters,” James said after adding 14 rebounds and 10 assists, accounting for the 113th triple-double of his career. “I have the luxury of having a MVP-caliber player next to me [in Anthony Davis]. AR [Austin Reaves] can get it going in bunches. D-Lo [D’Angelo Russell] can catch fire. Rui [Hachimura] has been consistent, and he can get going and score in bunches, as well. “So, this team is not built for me to have 16-point quarters through all four quarters. That’s not how it’s constructed and nor should it be. We’re a team, and we all play together.” -via ESPN / October 27, 2024
Dave McMenamin: Anthony Davis is up to 32 points on 11-for-18 shooting after dropping 36 in the opener. It’s the first time he’s started a season with two straight 30-point games since 2017-18 in New Orleans. He finished 3rd in MVP voting that year. -via Twitter @mcten / October 26, 2024
“I guess a little bit of everything,” James said of what was working for him in the fourth quarter. “I caught a rhythm, had my outside shot going, got a couple ones in the paint as well. Got a backdoor from DLo (D’Angelo Russell) that worked well. So just trying to see what I had going to help us get us over the hump on this back-to-back.” James scored his 16 fourth-quarter points over a two-minute and 59-second stretch. Entering the game, he scored just 16 and 21 points, respectively, over Los Angeles’ first two wins. Lakers coach JJ Redick called the experience of watching James in the fourth quarter “surreal.” “What can you say?” Redick said. “We’ve all been very fortunate to watch his greatness for so long and the fact that he’s able to keep doing it, it’s just, it’s actually insane. It’s actually insane.” -via New York Times / October 27, 2024
They grabbed 13 more rebounds than the Kings and ended up with four more shots despite turning it over five more times than Sacramento. And while Sabonis had a triple-double with 29 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists, and De’Aaron Fox had 28 and 10 assists, James and the Lakers’ stars were just better. “In general, when you operate out of gratitude you sometimes have a feeling of surrealness. And I’ve certainly had that many times in many days as the head coach of the Lakers,” Redick said. “And tonight was a surreal moment to watch him [and] coach him.” -via Los Angeles Times / October 27, 2024
