A Timeline of Young Thug’s YSL RICO Trial
The hip-hop world was collectively turned upside down When Young Thug (born Jeffery Williams) along with 27 others were arrested in May 2022 as part of a sprawling 56-count indictment for violations of Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.
Thugger was identified to be the leader of Young Stoner Life, which Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis believes is a violent street gang that has a history dating back to 2012 of committing a series of crimes including murder, robbery, theft, carjackings, assaults and more.
“It does not matter what your notoriety is, what your fame is,” Willis said following Thug’s arrest. Young Thug and his legal team have maintained the rapper’s innocence at every step of the RICO trial since his arrest.
Young Thug has been denied bond on multiple occasions and will remain behind bars in Cobb County jail until the highly publicized trial concludes. It took more than a year for the case to seat a jury, and the YSL RICO trial finally kicked off in November 2023.
According to Atlanta’s NBC affiliate 11Alive, prosecutors said in court im 2023 that its laundry list of potential witnesses included 737 names. After starting at 28 co-defendants, that number has since dwindled to six, including Young Thug.
After delays, requests for bail denied, multiple changes in judges, accusations of prosecutorial misconduct and more, the rapper agreed to a plea deal on Oct. 31, 2024.
Young Thug and his syrupy squeal ushered in a new wave of Atlanta’s trap sound in the mid-2010s, and he put together back-to-back No. 1 albums as an emerging face of hip-hop prior to his arrest. Even while behind bars, Thug’s Business Is Business managed to debut at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in June 2023.
Take a dive into Billboard‘s comprehensive timeline of the YSL RICO trial below.

June 2, 2022: Young Thug Denied Bail
Young Thug got a bond hearing a month after being arrested, but he was denied bail. Prosecutors labeled him the head of the operation and the “most dangerous” part of the alleged gang, and argued he shouldn’t be allowed to have access to the streets again. They also feared witness intimidation could be in play if Thug walked out of jail. Thug’s team tried to argue that he was needed at home as a father and a pillar of the Atlanta community, to no avail.
His requests for bail have been repeatedly denied, with the fourth request being rejected July 2023.

“While I have agreed to always be truthful, I want to make it perfectly clear that I have NOT made any statements, have NOT been interviewed, have NOT cooperated, have NOT agreed to testify or be a witness for or against any party in the case and have absolutely NO intention of being involved in the trial process in any way,” the rapper said in a statement after the plea deal.

May 11, 2023: Young Thug Briefly Hospitalized
Thug fell ill during a May 2023 court proceeding and was hospitalized briefly. Details of his situation were not provided due to medical privacy laws. “I know he’s had some difficulty of a similar sort at the Cobb County Jail a few months ago, and so I’m obviously concerned about his wellbeing,” Thug’s attorney said to the judge.
Young Thug’s legal team had previously complained that the rapper was suffering from exhaustion in jail during an April 2023 hearing.
“Mr. Williams is sleep deprived, mandated to wake up on court days between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. and not having more than five hours of sleep per night,” his attorneys said. “By the end of the week, Mr. Williams is fighting to pay attention to the goings on in his case.”

Despite hours of deliberation and arguments from the defense, Judge Ural Glanville ruled that lyrics were not protected by the First Amendment. Seventeen sets of lyrics will be used against Young Thug and his YSL co-defendants as part of the case.
“They’re not prosecuting your clients because of the songs they wrote,” Glanville said. “They’re using the songs to prove other things your clients may have been involved in. I don’t think it’s an attack on free speech.”
-
Nov. 28, 2023: Young Thug’s Attorney Defines “Thug”
The much-delayed trial finally began on Nov. 27, 2023, and Thug’s attorney Brian Steel delivered the first viral moment of the trial when he shocked viewers and the prosecution with his alternate definition of his client’s artistic moniker, which he defined as “Truly Humble Under God.” He also explained that “Pushin P” was just “pushing positivity” and YSL was named after the Yves Saint Laurent fashion designer.
-
Dec. 10, 2023: YSL Co-Defendant Stabbed in Jail

Per WSB-TV, inmate Willie Brown admitted to stabbing Stillwell multiple times after taking the knife out of Stillwell’s hands. “I went into his room and he [Stillwell] pulled out a knife on me and [I] took it from him and stabbed him with it,” Brown reportedly told investigators.

Jan. 3, 2024: YSL Co-Founder Identifies Young Thug as Founding Member
Trontavious Stephens took the witness stand after agreeing to a plea deal with eight years of probation. Stephens — who also goes by Tick and Slug — identified himself, Young Thug and Walter Murphy as the founding members of YSL, though he gave the prosecution trouble while having a tough time recalling certain events when he took the stand on Jan. 3, 2024.
Stephens claimed on the stand the next day that YSL was a record label first before anything and looked to be a positive evolution of the Raised on Cleveland street gang, which has Blood ties. “YSL is a music label. Music happened first. That was the approach,” he said, according to 11Alive. “Music.”
-
Jan. 11, 2024: Young Thug’s “Lifestyle” Played in Court
Thug’s legal team turned the tables when they played Rich Gang’s “Lifestyle” – Thug’s 2014 breakout hit – in an attempt to convince the jury this was merely art and he had no legitimate gang ties. While others wore Bloods-colored clothing in the extravagant music video, Thugger didn’t have on an ounce of red. Thug didn’t have much of any reaction to the track being played in court.
This marked another moment from the trial that caught fire on social media and went viral.
-
Feb. 16, 2024: YSL Defense Attorney Arrested on Unrelated Gang Charges
Attorney Nicole Fegan represented a former co-defendant of the YSL trial named Tenquarius Mender, and was herself arrested in court on charges related to a separate 2022 Atlanta gang shooting. She was charged with participating in criminal street gang activity and evidence tampering.
Fegan has been accused of telling the alleged gunman to dispose of the murder weapon, and she allegedly made contact with a separate defendant about an active arrest warrant, per The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Mender’s case was separated from Young Thug’s in May 2023, and will be tried separately.

Feb. 20, 2024: Young Thug Identified as Alleged Gunman in 911 Call
The prosecution played a 911 phone call in court made by an anonymous woman on Sept. 11, 2013, in which she identified Young Thug as the gunman in a shooting of a mutual friend. “They came to my house and told me that the guy who shot somebody’s name was Young Thug, whoever that’s supposed to be,” she can be heard saying.
-
March 19, 2024: Witness Admits to Being High Under Oath
Prosecutors called Adrien Bean to the stand to get his testimony about his comments regarding Young Thug’s alleged gang ties, which Bean made when he was arrested in connection to a drive-by shooting.
However, the hearing took a turn when Bean claimed he was intoxicated and urged court personnel to bring him a bottle of water. “Can I get a water or something? I’m so high right now, y’all, I’m about to go to sleep on y’all now. I am,” Bean said.
Judge Glanville granted Bean’s request and allowed him to finish testifying.

April 4, 2024: Judge Denies Young Thug’s Motion to Have Lead Prosecutor Removed
Thug’s attorneys filed a motion to have Fulton County Assistant District Attorney Adriane Love taken off the YSL RICO trial, but the request was denied by Judge Glanville, according to WSB-TV. Thug’s lawyer, Brian Steel, believed that Love was “continuously” injecting herself as an unsworn witness in the case with her methods of questioning the alleged victim of a 2013 robbery on the stand. Love started statements with “Isn’t it true you told me,” which Thug’s team took issue with.
However, the requests to have Love take the stand or off the case altogether were denied.
-
July 1, 2024: Trial on Hold
The trial was put on hold to await the decision of another magistrate, as lawyers for the rapper and the other defendants had filed motions to have Fulton County Superior Court Chief Judge Ural Glanville recuse himself from the case. The defendants argued that because Judge Glanville had a meeting with prosecutors and a witness for the prosecution without having any of the defense attorneys or defendants present that it was an “improper” meeting, and alleged the judge and prosecutors were trying to pressure the witness into testifying.
-
July 15, 2024: Judge Removed
Judge Rachel Krause ordered Judge Glanville to removed from the case after the rapper and other defendants argued that Glanville’s “secret” meeting with prosecution and a witness violated their right to a fair trial. “This court has no doubt that Judge Glanville can and would continue presiding fairly over this matter if the recusal motions were denied,” Krause wrote in her decision. “But the necessity of preserving the public’s confidence in the judicial system weighs in favor of excusing Judge Glanville from further handling of this case.”
-
July 17, 2024: Replacement Judge Recuses Herself
Two days after Judge Glanville was removed from the case, replacement Judge Shukura L. Ingram recused herself. She cited her association with Fulton County Courthouse deputy Akeiba Stanley, who had previously been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle contraband to another defendant. “Because this court’s former assigned deputy could be called as a witness in any future proceedings in this case, the court may be called upon to assess this deputy’s credibility or rule on matters related to her criminal prosecution,” Ingram wrote. “This may undermine the public’s confidence in the impartiality of the proceedings.”
-
July 30: Bail Denied Again
Judge Paige Reese Whitaker denied Thug’s renewed request to be released on house arrest until a verdict could be reached. “I don’t know how I would have decided the bond originally,” the judge said at the time. “That’s not before me. These are not the kind of changed circumstances [required under precedent], so I’m not going to reconsider the bond.”
-
Aug. 8: Calls for Mistrial Rejected
Judge Whitaker denied the two remaining motions calling for a mistrial, arguing that Judge Glanville’s “secret” meeting was not enough to require the trial to start from scratch. But Whitaker also noted that since this was not the first allegation of prosecutorial misconduct in the case, she ordered the prosecutors to attend additional training on properly disclosing evidence.

Oct. 29-30, 2024: Co-Defendants Take Plea Deals
Quamarvious Nichols agreed to a plea deal that saw him pleading guilty to one count of violating the state’s anti-racketeering laws, with his murder and weapons charges dropped. Judge Whitaker agreed to a sentence of 20 years behind bars, though he will have to serve seven, with the remaining 13 on probation.
Two more of Thug’s co-defendants took plea deals the following day. Marquavius “Qua” Huey pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy, robbery and several other counts, while Rodalius “Lil Rod” Ryan, pled guilty to a single racketeering conspiracy charge and received a 10-year sentence, which was commuted to time served; he was already serving a life sentence for a 2019 murder. Huey received a 25-year sentence, with nine to be served behind bars.
This left the rapper and two other co-defendants facing trial.
-
Oct. 31, 2024: Young Thug Takes Plea Deal
The rapper agreed to a plea deal on Halloween, pleading guilty to several counts that included possession of drugs and firearms, and no contest to others, including racketeering. Judge Whitaker sentenced him to 15 years probation with no time in prison. “I know you’re talented, and if you choose to continue to rap, you need to try to use your influence to let kids know that is not the way to go and that there are ways out of poverty besides hooking up with the powerful guy at the end of the street selling drugs,” the judge said.
Deamonte “Yak Gotti” Kendrick and Shannon Stillwell declined plea deals, and are still facing trial.
