Hiker hit with fine after parking at Peak District beauty spot

A woman has issued a warning after getting a nasty surprise at a Peak District beauty spot.

Chelsea Coltart visited Mam Tor on January 18.

The area is famous for its stunning views of the Derbyshire countryside, and the marketing manager wanted to catch a glimpse of the sunrise.

But after enjoying a walk, she discovered that her car, parked in a no-stopping zone, had been damaged, and she’d been fined.

Ms Coltart said she made the mistake of copying other drivers; the area was “super, super rammed” and “in chaos”, thinking that she’d found a great place to park.

But, after the ordeal, the 28-year-old will not make the same mistake again.

She posted a video on TikTok in the hope that others won’t end up having a similar experience.

“My biggest regret was assuming that the small stay car park would have spaces in it at that time,” she said.

This gets really busy from around 3am onwards, Ms Coltart said.

She added that drivers can park on Mam Tor road, but “please make sure you’re in a desginated space, or you will be ticketed, and you will cause local uproar as well, and trust me, you do not want that.”

The best bet, she said, is using a car park in the village of Castleton.

A local bus driver commented on the video, writing: “We use that bit of road.

“We had to divert all day and affecting local people getting to shops. Please park more considerately next time everybody.”

It comes as roads in the Peak District National Park have been affected by parking issues recently.

This includes on January 11 when “around 200 cars” stopped gritting from taking place.

On Friday, those affected urged MPs, councils and emergency services to come together and tackle the problem, the BBC reports.
