Boston Fleet Defeat Ottawa Charge 3-2 in Overtime – The Hockey Writers PWHL Latest News, Analysis & More

The Ottawa Charge hosted the Boston Fleet for their third matchup of the 2024-25 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PHWL) season. Despite the Charge making an excellent last-second comeback, the Fleet were able to take the win 3-2 in overtime. Boston has now won all three of their matchups against the Charge. This game also marks their third win in a row.

Game Recap

Eight minutes into the first period, the Fleet opened up the scoring. Hannah Brandt had the puck by the boards, but was unable to find a scoring opportunity. She saw Jamie Lee Rattray alone near the net and sent a pass to her. Theresa Schafzahl skated up, and Rattray passed to her when she still had momentum. She skated closer to the net and released her shot. The puck found the back of the net and the Fleet were on the board.

Three minutes after the Fleet opened the scoring, they earned their first penalty. Daniela Pejsova went to the box for holding, and the Charge earned their first power play. They were unable to capitalize and the game returned to 5-on-5.

At 16:03, the Fleet received their second penalty when Hilary Knight had to sit for tripping. She was not in the box long. Emma Greco won the faceoff and sent the puck straight to Alina Muller. She grabbed it and made her way across the ice. She skated around the three Charge players who tried to defend her and sent the puck into the net. Muller scored a jailbreak goal and sprung Knight from the box just nine seconds after she entered it. The first period came to a close with the Fleet up by two.

The second period opened with the Charge receiving their first penalty. Emily Clark sat for a tripping call at 4:58. The Fleet were unable to capitalize on their first extra woman advantage. At 17:08, they earned their second when Jincy Roese sat for holding. Once again, the Fleet didn’t capitalize and they were quick to go into the box after 5-on-5 resumed. Shay Maloney had to sit for hooking at 19:22. Despite no scoring in the second, the Charge would start the third on the power play.

Halfway into the third period, the two teams got scrappy. Both Jill Saulnier and Tereza Vanisova tried dropping the gloves. The pair each earned two two-minute roughing minors. With four minutes of 4-on-4, neither team was able to score.

With six minutes left to go in the game, Jessica Digirolamo sat for holding, and the Charge capitalized with their first power play goal. As the power play dwindled, Danielle Serdachny dropped the puck for Vanisova. She passed to Ronja Savolainen in the faceoff circle. She let the puck fly and on the last second of the power play, she scored the first goal of the night for Ottawa.

In the final seconds of the game, the Charge won the faceoff. Brianne Jenner got a hold of the puck, passing to Clark in the center of the ice. She passed to Vanisova on her left, who took a shot with three seconds left on the clock. The puck found the back of the net, and the game would be going to overtime to decide the winner.

With 44 seconds left in overtime, the Fleet were able to put the game away. Susanna Tapani intercepted the puck off a Charge pass and drove to the net. She outskated the two Charge players who tried to defend her and sent the puck into the back of the net to earn Boston their third straight win.
