After biting temperatures over the past week, the UK is set to be hotter than Greece and Turkey today.

Some parts of the country will see highs of 15C , especially in the south, but even northern England and Scotland will enjoy a rather balmy 14C.

That’s way above the average temperatures for the end of February, which sit around 7-8C.

It comes as holiday hotspots in the Mediterranean face Storm Coral, leaving Greece, for example, with daytime highs as low as 5C.

Turkey, popular with British tourists, is also seeing cooler weather, with temperatures today at around 10C in Antalya on the Turkish coast.

Other European cities enjoying the unseasonably warm weather include Paris and Amsterdam, both 15C today.

The weekend is set to be a touch cooler, but still mild, with London and the south hovering around 13C on Saturday and 12C on Sunday, with the north one or two degrees below that.

Speaking about the unusual weather flip between the UK and parts of the Mediterranean, Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said: ‘Temperatures in particular locations can vary markedly with some regions being considerably higher or lower than average.

‘The UK is currently experiencing temperatures much higher than average with the influence of tropical Atlantic air feeding in over coming days.

‘If a normally warm region, like Greece, is experiencing colder than average conditions then that can create temporary anomalous situations where one normally warmer region is cooler than other normally cooler regions.

‘This is what has happened between the UK and Greece over this week. However, this is a temporary situation, and in the longer-term the temperature differences will balance out once more.’

With the warmer weather today, also comes significant rain and wind for some, with the Met Office issuing yellow weather warnings for parts of Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Although less severe, much of England will also experience wind and rain – the latter moving eastward throughout the day – as well as sunny spells.
