Mayor Eric Adams gets laser hair removal while touting $85M investment in NYC small businesses

Hair goes nothing.

Mayor Eric Adams got a laser hair removal procedure in Manhattan this week while touting his administration’s support of small businesses.

Photos posted on social media shortly after the plucky endeavour showed Hizzoner reclining in a chair at Harlem Zen, a wellness spa on Frederick Douglass Blvd., Monday as owner Angela McTair lasered away his seemingly already hairless head.

“I’m going to surrender and submit,” Adams told McTair prior to the procedure, which is known to be painful.

Adams used the spotlight to call attention to his administration’s Small Business Opportunity Fund, a public-private partnership launched in January 2023 that has doled out more than $85 million in loans to 1,046 businesses, according to City Hall.

The fund started with $75 million from the city and private partners, such as Goldman Sachs and the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth. It offers low-interest loans of up to $250,000 to eligible small businesses.

McTair received a $60,000 loan from the fund that allowed her to move locations and improve her spa services.

Video of the procedure posted by ABC7 showed McTair lasering the back of Adams’ head while the mayor wore dark safety glasses. 

“With help like what you gave us, we were able to upgrade to this machine that you’ll be experiencing today,” the spa owner excitedly told Adams in the video.

Users on Reddit who claimed to have had laser hair removal described the experience similar to having your skin “lit on fire.”

But during the 10-minute procedure, Adams seemed relatively calm as he spoke to a reporter about his administration’s small business support.

“I’m able to come into the community and say ok we did this policy, we put these millions of dollars in and now we can see the results,” Adams said as the green laser pulsed.

The photo op was Adams’ second hair removal stunt in a month after he got his brows threaded in Queens in January to celebrate a public safety initiative on Roosevelt Avenue. 

Facebook users mocked Hizzoner over the laser hair removal antic.

“This guy will do anything except his job as mayor,” one person snipped.

“Oh dear the photo ops,” wrote another.

It’s not clear if or how much the mayor paid for the procedure, or whether he plans to get more laser hair removal sessions. A City Hall rep didn’t return a request for comment.
