You could buy your very own Cold War nuclear bunker if worried about World War 3

A nuclear bunker, constructed in the 1950s amidst Cold War anxieties, is set to go under the hammer with a guide price of £150,000. The Grade II listed war room and bunker are situated on the southern fringe of a large residential development in Bristol, where plans for 160 homes are underway.

The Brislington War Room was erected in 1953 as a safeguard for the regional government against a potential atomic bomb attack. However, it has remained unoccupied since the 1980s.

The war room and bunker are scheduled for auction on March 12, with a guide price of £150,000. Auction house Hollis Morgan reveals that the bunker’s ground floor spans 8,709 square feet, while the basement covers 3,509 square feet.

The property also boasts off-street parking for six to eight vehicles. Andrew Morgan MBE, an auctioneer at Hollis Morgan, commented: “We are all only too aware of conflicts around the globe and we should all feel grateful to be free of such traumas in the UK.”

He added: “However, this has not always been the case. The war years 1940-1945 saw the nation in a perilously dangerous state and the government rapidly setting up centres in order to run the country despite bombing and a pending invasion.”

He concluded by saying: “These Grade II listed war rooms are a salutary reminder of these troubled days and provide a great insight into the conditions in which people had to work and on occasion, live.”

“Freedom was indeed hard-won. Whilst remembering the past this property does provide the opportunities for some educational/community use, commercial opportunities or storage etc.
