The Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs will play Sunday in Super Bowl LIX (6:30 p.m. ET, Fox) just two years after meeting in Super Bowl LVII. Sunday’s matchup marks just the 10th SB rematch in NFL history.
Here’s a ranking of each of the previous rematches, from worst to best.
9. Super Bowl LIII (Feb. 3, 2019) | Patriots 13, Rams 3
First meeting: Patriots 20, Rams 17 (Super Bowl XXXVI)
Rematch: This game is the lowest-scoring Super Bowl in NFL history. The Patriots prevented the Rams from avenging their heartbreaking Super Bowl XXXVI loss in 2001, bookending the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick era with titles over the same franchise.
8. Super Bowl XXVIII (Jan. 30, 1994) | Cowboys 30 Bills 13
First meeting: Cowboys 52, Bills 17 (Super Bowl XXVII)
Rematch: This was an unprecedented fourth consecutive Super Bowl loss for Buffalo and the only occurrence of back-to-back matchups between the same teams. Both games were unquestioned dominations by Dallas, which tied the then-record for most Super Bowl wins by a franchise (four, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers).
7. Super Bowl XVII (Jan. 30, 1983) | Washington 27, Dolphins 17
First meeting: Dolphins 14, Washington 7 (Super Bowl VII)
Rematch: After the first player strike to shorten an NFL season in the Super Bowl era, Washington emerged as champions with an 8-1 record to win the NFC. The team also became the first in league history to defeat its opponent in a Super Bowl rematch after losing the first meeting.
6. Super Bowl XXX (Jan. 28, 1996) | Cowboys 27, Steelers 17
Second meeting: Steelers 35, Cowboys 31 (Super Bowl XIII)
Rematch: This is still the only Super Bowl matchup between the same teams to reach a third edition. Despite Pittsburgh winning the first two games, the most recent was arguably more impactful on league history. Dallas became the first franchise to win three Super Bowls in four seasons and the first to claim five Lombardi trophies.
5. Super Bowl XIII (Jan. 21, 1979) | Steelers 35, Cowboys 31
First meeting: Steelers 21, Cowboys 17 (Super Bowl X)
Rematch: The Steelers became the first franchise to win a Super Bowl rematch and also earn three Lombardi trophies. The game featured 19 future Pro Football Hall of Famers, still the most all time.
4. Super Bowl XXIII (Jan. 22, 1989) | 49ers 20, Bengals 16
First meeting: 49ers 26, Bengals 21 (Super Bowl XVI)
Rematch: This game is best known for the last-minute, winning drive led by San Francisco quarterback Joe Montana. The 49ers scored the go-ahead touchdown with just 34 seconds left, capping off a tight game included the first halftime tie in Super Bowl history.
3. Super Bowl LII (Feb. 4, 2018) – Eagles 41, Patriots 33
First meeting: Patriots 24, Eagles 21 (Super Bowl XXXIX)
Rematch: Philadelphia can point to this game as precedent for it ending historic Super Bowl three-peat attempts. The Eagles avenged their Super Bowl XXXIX loss to New England, making the words “Philly Special” and the name “Nick Foles” synonymous with some of the greatest upsets league history.
2. Super Bowl XLVI (Feb. 5, 2012) | Giants 21, Patriots 17
First meeting: Giants 17, Patriots 14 (Super Bowl XLII)
Rematch: Some fans may immediately think of Super Bowl XLII and the New York Giants preventing New England from completing the first 18-0 season. Four years later, the Giants were asked to prove that iconic win was no fluke. They delivered once again against Brady and Belichick with a late game-winning drive that included a massive pass from Eli Manning to wide receiver Mario Manningham.
1. Super Bowl LVIII (Feb. 11, 2024) | Chiefs 25, 49ers 22 in OT
First meeting: Chiefs 31, 49ers 20 (Super Bowl LIV)
Rematch: In the second Super Bowl to reach overtime, Kansas City turned it into an all-time classic. The Chiefs won their third title in four seasons, cementing their modern dynasty and setting them up for a historic first three-peat if they emerge victorious in New Orleans on Sunday.
