Warning! Spoilers ahead for Superman: Lex Luthor Special #1!Lex Luthor has a chance to prove to Superman that he can be a better person, but will he actually do it? Lex has come a long way since the two forged a new alliance, but when the old Luthor is needed, is Lex going to try to hang onto his new way of life?
In Superman: Lex Luthor Special #1 by Joshua Williamson, Eddy Barrows, and Eber Ferreira, Mister Terrific is trying to make contact with the Absolute Universe, but he’s hit a wall. Terrific needs a brilliant, but devious mind like Lex Luthor’s to help make contact with the new world.
However, Lex insists he’s still suffering from amnesia. But Superman later hears from Mister Terrific that Lex sent him designs for a transmitter that can send sound waves across the multiverse. Superman suddenly hears a song he heard Lex once play as a child and realizes Luthor has his old memories back.
Lex Luthor Has Regained Every Memory That He Lost
But What Does This Mean For His New Partnership with Superman?
Lex wasn’t joking around when he said he wanted to turn over a new leaf. Not only did he hand his business over to Superman, Lex worked side-by-side with his old nemesis to improve Metropolis, re-from members of Superman’s rogues’ gallery, and stop dangerous threats. Luthor even rose to the occasion when Brainiac invaded Metropolis and connected his mind to the Brainiac hive mind in order to erase it. Unfortunately, this backfired and also erased Lex’s mind as well. Lex has struggled to remember who he was, but he’s been developing strong bonds with both his daughter and Mercy Graves.
Despite everything he’s done in the past, Lex has been earnest about wanting to be a better person. Throughout the current Superman volume, he’s been upfront about the worst parts of his past, and he’s made steps to improve himself. He also seemed content to leave his old self behind and live out a new one free from the ego and obsession that defined his pre-amnesia self. But now his old memories are starting to slip back and the question has to be asked: Is Lex Luthor going back to his old ways and becoming Superman’s greatest enemy once again?

With His Memories Back, Superman’s Nemesis Could Easily Backslide
With his amnesia, there was no real risk that Lex was going back to the dark side. But if Lex truly recalls everything, then there’s a non-zero chance that he’ll become a villain once more. Unfortunately, there’s a dark part of Luthor’s mind that he remembers now, the same part of him that drove him to try and kill Superman numerous times. Of course, he could still keep improving on himself, but given his history, things don’t look good. Hopefully, now that Lex Luthor has his memories back, Superman can help his friend away from a life of crime.
Superman: Lex Luthor Special #1 is available now from DC Comics.
