Map shows where heavy fog will cover the UK this week

A thick blanket of fog will cover a large portion of the United Kingdom in the coming days – prompting the Met Office to issue a yellow weather warning.

Driving conditions could worsen as the fog descends from Exeter to York, covering some parts of Wales.

The warning stretches across the East Midlands, East of England,London & South East England, South West England, Wales, the West Midlands, and Yorkshire & Humber.

The Met Office said the issue will last for the next few days, with some pockets of frost expected to usher in clearer skies.

Meteorologist Clare Nasir said: ‘In fact, that’s how we see this evening and overnight, stubborn cloud anywhere from the Midlands, East Anglia down towards the South East.

‘A lot of cloud across the northwest of Scotland, with some outbreaks of rain in between, some clearer skies.’

‘Elsewhere with those clearer skies, we’ll probably see some pockets of frost, so temperatures dipping close to freezing, if not below, and again, with a lighter breeze, fog will re-form anywhere from central and southern parts of England and Wales down towards the west country.’

Trains, buses and flights could see delays during the foggy conditions, which could mean slower journey times, according to the Met Office.

Heavy fog cancelled dozens of flights and delayed others in late December last year.

Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, Manchester and Glasgow were just some of the airports affected by the lingering fog which began just after Christmas.

Low visibility meant temporary air travel restrictions were put into place.

When it’s foggy, drivers are recommended to only drive when necessary, ensure their headlights are working properly and to use their fog lights – when required.

Drivers should only use fog lights when visibility drops below 100m, according to The Highway Code.

If you’re not sure when that is, check if you can see the tail lights of the car in front of you. If you can’t, you should be using rear fog lights.

Then, when visibility rises above 100m, remember to turn off lights to avoid dazzling other drivers.

Lastly, drive slowly and keep your distance – you never know what could be in front of you in low visibility.
