Parents have been urged to be mindful of an innocent but potentially fatal mistake while trying to keep their children warm during the cold snap.

When taking youngsters out in chilly weather, the instinct is to wrap them up in plenty of layers.

While obviously a sensible move in most scenarios, experts say it should be avoided when strapping babies and toddlers into their car seat.

Bigger garments like coats and snowsuits may be cosy but they could have devastating consequences should you find yourself slamming on the brakes in an emergency with a child not properly secured.

Graham Conway, managing director at Select Car Leasing, told The Huffington Post puffier clothing can make the straps securing youngsters in their car seats seem tighter than they actually are.

Instead, he advises clothing children in thinner layers, like long-sleeved tops and fitted jumpers.

Blankets can be added – but only after the straps have been properly tightened and clipped in.

Graham also warns against giving children hats during car journeys.

They can slip down and cover their faces, he added, saying it is not just a nuisance but could potentially restrict their breathing.

The UK recorded its coldest January night in 15 years last night as more freezing temperatures are expected to roll in over the coming days.

A hamlet in northern Scotland dropped to minus 17.3C today, the Met Office has said.

Weather warnings for ice were in place across most of Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as large parts of the east of England, until 10am on Friday.
