Driver dies after crashing into wall during police chase in Sheffield
An 18-year-old man has died in a crash after a brief police chase which involved a suspected stolen car in South Yorkshire.
The driver of a black Ford Fiesta was spotted by officers just before 1pm on Monday in the Hyde Park Walk area, south of Sheffield city centre.
South Yorkshire Police said in a statement: “While in the area, a black Ford Fiesta believed to have been stolen has reacted to the police presence and attempted to flee the scene.
“Following a short pursuit, the black Fiesta has collided with a wall.
“An 18-year-old man was taken to hospital where he has sadly died as a result of his injuries.”
Officers cordoned off East Bank Road for a while during their investigation and recovery of the vehicle.
“As is standard for such incidents, a referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC),” the police force added.
The police watchdog, the IOPC, investigates serious incidents, including when the actions of officers may have resulted in serious injury or death.
Police said the family of the man “have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers”.
The force has also appealed for the public’s help with any information, dashcam or CCTV footage.
Officers are particularly interested in anyone who was in the area of City Road, Park Grange Road, Spring Lane and Northern Avenue to come forward.
