Cobra Kai’s New Romance Supports A Major Theory About The Show’s Final Villain

The new romance blossoming in the midst of Cobra Kai’s sixth season bolsters theories about the final obstacle that the show’s main characters will have to overcome. Due to the nature of Cobra Kai season 6 part 2’s ending, there’s a strong sense of ambiguity regarding what the last segment has in store. Even if the Sekai Taikai tournament won’t be canceled, there’s hardly enough fighting left to fill up five episodes. Since it’s clear that the third and last arc will extend beyond the competition, it can be presumed that Cobra Kai’s main characters will soon have another conflict on their hands.

The show has been careful not to reveal its hand thus far. Johnny and Daniel’s rivalries with Kreese and Silver remain unresolved, but whether either conflict will drive the plot of an entire five-episode arc remains to be seen. One possibility is that another character – namely, Kim Sun-Yung – will be their primary adversary going forward. This is made more likely by two developments in Cobra Kai season 6 part 2, one of which being Chozen’s relationship with his granddaughter.

It Would Seem That Kim Sun-Yung And Chozen’s Uncle Were Once Enemies

The romantic relationship forming between Chozen and Kim Dau-eun carries some interesting implications for the series, especially since their relatives have some established history. Shortly after realizing that Terry Silver was a pupil of Kim Sun-Yung, Chozen revealed a connection between his uncle, The Karate Kid Part II’s Sato, and the infamous Tang Soo Do master. According to Chozen, Sato held “much anger” toward Kim, who had trained American soldiers during the Korean War. Curiously, the show didn’t elaborate on the source of this anger, as even Chozen himself didn’t seem to know the reason for it.

However, at least some presumptions can be made about their relationship. Considering that both were martial arts experts and that one had a strong dislike of the other, it stands to reason that the pair were rivals. Differences in methods and natural competitiveness could have fueled any personal resentment that they might have had for one another.

The issues that Sato had with Kim, regardless of what they were, are likely to carry over into the present. After all, Sato’s nephew and Kim’s granddaughter look set to become a couple. Given the show’s depiction of Kim Sun-Yung as a very traditional martial arts master, it’s not hard to imagine him taking a hardline stance on someone in his family becoming romantically involved with a rival’s blood relative. Assuming that Sato’s hatred of Kim was mutual, this new romance is on track to become a massive problem for all three characters.

Cobra Kai season 6, part 2’s massive twist ending included two key moments that seem to set up a redemption story in the balance since Karate Kid.

Going in this direction could be what pulls Kim into the orbit of Cobra Kai’s main characters. As things stand, he’s had no reason to meet any member of Johnny and Daniel’s Miyagi-do dojo personally and has seemingly stayed on the sidelines in South Korea. But if Chozen and Dae-eun want to continue their relationship, the former may feel compelled to meet with Kim in person.

In addition to potentially rejecting Chozen, Kim could see him as a way of projecting his rivalry with Sato onto a new face. After all, it’s worth noting that these sorts of rivalries being generational is a common trope in old-school martial arts movies, of which Kim appears to be an intentional caricature.

​​​​​​While this theory about Kim turning out to be true could spell trouble for any hopes of his new romance working out, it would be good news for his character’s story in general. If Chozen is someone that the villain of the last five episodes has a personal beef with, that would pave the way for the character to factor significantly into the struggles ahead. Since joining the cast in season 4, Cobra Kai has already been generous to Chozen in terms of the screen-time it’s offered him, but the last segment has the potential to go even further.

It’s important to note that while Chozen has fought Silver, both his and Kreese’s primary opponents have always been Daniel and Johnny. Master Kim, on the other hand, would have cause to focus specifically on Chozen. This could allow Chozen to have a role unique to the ones he’s held previously, and set up some exciting confrontations going forward. Another benefit to this story taking place is that it could lead to Chozen finally fighting Kreese, a character he’s surprisingly yet to have any interactions with in Cobra Kai.

What the show is currently doing with Chozen and Dae-eun isn’t the only indication that the series is laying the groundwork for Master Kim to be the ultimate antagonist of the series. The most obvious sign stems simply from what he represents; as the martial artist who trained both Kreese and Silver, Kim is essentially the true father of Cobra Kai and in turn, the catalyst of all the conflict the franchise has seen since the events of the first movie. For that reason on its own, it would be appropriate for the show to make Kim its last “big bad.“

There’s also the matter of Kwon’s fate in Cobra Kai. It’s not known if Kwon has any personal link to Kim outside of being one of his dojo’s students, but there’s a strong possibility that the chain of events set off by his death will include an appearance from his master. Due to Kwon being under his dojo’s tutelage, Kim could demand accountability for his death and look to make Kreese’s rivalry with Miyagi-Do his own.

Knowing about his granddaughter’s relationship with one of the dojo’s senseis – who happens to be the nephew of an old enemy – would naturally only worsen tensions.

Of course, Miyagi-Do isn’t responsible for what happened to Kim, but he may not be aware of this right away and may look for someone to blame. On account of the rivalry with Miyagi-Do being the reason for the brawl in the first place, it would make sense for Kim to direct his anger at them in Cobra Kai. Knowing about his granddaughter’s relationship with one of the dojo’s senseis – who happens to be the nephew of an old enemy – would naturally only worsen tensions.
