DC Debuts the Justice League’s New Spaceship That Is Fully Powered by The Flash

Warning: Spoilers for Challengers of the Unknown #1

The Justice League is back as the premier team of the DC Universe, and they’re residing in a revamped Watchtower that’s teeming with advanced tech. Among these upgrades is a new form of transportation, courtesy of the Flash, that puts the Batmobile to shame. The Justice League now has access to the ultimate spaceship, and the Flash’s surprising addition makes it the fastest ship in DC lore.

In Challengers of the Unknown #1 by Christopher Cantwell, Sean Izaakse, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, Ace Morgan is enlisted by the Justice League to embark on a mission to Mars alongside Superman. To traverse space, Ace decides to pilot the Justice League’s newest spaceship: the JL-657.

The JL-657 is described as a “Speed Force-Augmented Turbo Thruster Control”, which means it’s a ship that’s been enhanced with the Flash’s Speed Force – the source of his power. This super-powered rocket can move at the velocity of DC’s fastest speedsters, and the Justice League has Flash to thank for their new ride.

The Flash’s Powers Grant the Justice League Their Fastest Vehicle Ever

Challengers of the Unknown 1 Superman says that Batman and Flash will be upset if the JL-657 is broken as Ace flies the ship

The Justice League’s awesome new rocket combines the Flash’s powers with technology to achieve more efficient space travel. When Ace prepares to fly the JL-657, Superman informs him that Batman and the Flash wouldn’t be thrilled if it broke, revealing that they were both involved in its creation. Batman has the resources and intellect to construct vehicles, hence his vast supply of Batmobiles and planes, and Wally West has an engineering background as well. Of course, the main contribution is made by the Flash, who’s successfully modified the ship to be fueled by the Speed Force after years of attempting this feat on a smaller scale.

DC Reveals Which Young Hero Will Lead the Justice League Once Its Modern Heroes Retire

The next generation of heroes is on the rise, and DC has just confirmed which hero will become the Justice League’s new leader in the future.

The JL-657 is the latest – and most impressive – in a long line of vehicles that the Flash has imbued with the Speed Force. In 2011’s The Flash #10 by Geoff Johns and Francis Manapul, a future variant of the Flash rides a Cosmic Motorcycle that can travel across dimensions and through time thanks to his otherworldly power source. More recently, during the One Minute War event, Wally gives a car its own Speed Force engine. Now, the Flash has perfected that design for the Justice League’s new ship, and he isn’t the only hero harnessing his powers to provide equipment for the team.

The Justice League Integrates Every Hero’s Powers to Into Its Inventions

From Membership Cards to Spaceships, The Justice League Is Built on Collaboration

In DC All In Special #1 by Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson, Wes Craig, and Daniel Sampere, this collaborative approach to tech is introduced with the creation of the Justice League’s membership cards. These cards’ hardware is first designed by DC’s smartest humans, including Batman and Ted Kord. They’re then charged with the Flash’s Speed Force, Green Lantern’s willpower, and various alien resources. Lastly, Wonder Woman and the Justice League Dark members channel magic into the cards. By involving everyone, the Justice League ensures that all heroes – from the Flash to underdogs like Blue Beetle – are key players in the development of technology.

Challengers of the Unknown #1 is available now from DC Comics.

The Flash

The Flash is the superhero name given to the DC Comics character who utilizes unparalleled speed tied to a dimensional power known as the “speed force” to overwhelm their opposition. Premiering in 1939, the original Flash arrived as Jay Garrick. Still, it would be superseded by Barry Allen in popularity and featured status, but the Flash is one character that has met many of their alternate selves. The character is typically seen as a part of the Justice League in nearly all incarnations.
