Pair of top Michelin-listed restaurants shut down permanently without warning

Two popular Michelin Guide-listed restaurants in Edinburgh have been abruptly shut down for good, leaving locals baffled.

The Gardener’s Cottage, located in a small park building near the city centre, and The Lookout, with an impressive view over the Scottish capital from a spot on top of Calton Hill, were both highly rated by critics.

No explanation for the news has been given, with a small message on the restaurants’ websites simply saying they are ‘now permanently closed’.

A short notice also thanks visitors for their support over the years.

One fan wrote on social media: ‘I loved The Gardener’s Cottage and would always recommend it to my B&B guests. I thought they’d be there forever.’

The website for The Lookout still features a section on plans for Hogmanay celebrations at the venue, which would take place in less than a month.

Costing £350 a head, the event offered a signature menu featuring venison tartar and Perthshire pheasant with a promise to end the night watching the New Year fireworks over Edinburgh Castle.

One local couple said they were ‘gutted’ by the sudden closure, as they had been given a £100 voucher to spend there as a birthday gift.

Nicola Molloy told Edinburgh Live: ‘I figured I would make a booking to use the voucher and I saw the banner online saying it was permanently closed and now I just want to know how it will be honoured.’

The Gardener’s Cottage was opened in Royal Terrace Gardens by owners Edward Murray and Dale Mailley in 2012.

It was quickly praised by notoriously fickle Sunday Times food reviewer AA Gill, who described the food as ‘exceptional’.

Six years later, Mr Mailley opened The Lookout as part of the development of the former City Observatory.

It won a favourable mention in the Michelin Guide for its ‘contemporary, pared-back dishes’.

The chef opened another restaurant in the city, named Stockbridge Eating House, on October 17.
