Ever wanted to drink mayonnaise? Japan has you covered

Japan’s latest viral drink may be too much for palates to handle…

You know how there are some words or concepts that just don’t sound right together – or shouldn’t be thought of in the same sentence?

Alcohol and driving, for example.

Religion and government, could be another.

Drake and basic reading comprehension (so that his diss tracks actually register).

You get the general idea.

Well, Japan has launched a new drink and it’s… It’s quite something and shoots onto our list above.

It’s called Nomu Mayo, and you’ve probably guessed what the main ingredient is.

Yes, it’s a drinkable form of mayonnaise, one that has already been branded online as “awful.”

Now, no one is here to taste shame, and it’s worth noting that mayonnaise is used heavily in Japan – whether in sandwiches, pizzas or in more traditional food like sushi and onigiri. However, the product launched by Lawson, a well-known Japanese convenience store chain, is a lot to take in.

According to Lawson, it’s a “chilled drink mayo fanatics have long been waiting for.”

We want names. For research purposes only.

Priced at ¥198 (approximately €1.25), the “mayonnaise-style drink” in a 200-mililiter cup is a white-coloured thick beverage (stay with us) that has a label noting ingredients like milk-based foods, mayonnaise-flavoured seasoning, and processed whole eggs.

Currently in a “test sale period”, early reviews suggest it tastes remarkably like mayonnaise. That said, the social media verdict is in and, rather predictably, mixed.

One X user was in a pickle: “I can’t decide if this is genius or a crime against food. Maybe both?”

Another needed clarity: “My taste buds are confused, but my curiosity is piqued. I need answers!”

One tried calming things down: “Relax, it’s just savoury eggnog.”

However, most went along these lines:

So, gagging to try? Or just gagging?
