Popular London pub ‘unexpectedly closes for good’ after landlord seizes it back
Another London pub has fallen victim to the city’s declining nightlife and has been forced to close for good.
Market House, in Brixton, south London, closed suddenly this weekend after landlords took back the property.
Notices from Executive Recoveries and Enforcement displayed on the windows read: ‘These premises have today been seized on the authority of the landlord.
‘Notice is hereby served and forfeiture of lease effected,’ Brixton Buzz reports
The venue was a popular two-storey pub, and was home to restaurant Original Flava, opened by food influencer brother’s Craig and Shaun McAnuff.
It served traditional Jamaican cuisine, with Market House becoming their first permanent restaurant residency.
It was reopened in March this year after being closed since 2021 to undergo extensive refurbishment.
The pub is just one of many who have to close over the last few years as London’s nightlife has declined.
The Dogstar, also in Brixton, closed for good in October, despite their reputation as being one of ‘the most visible Black clubs’ in the capital.
Squatters have since occupied the building and have even placed a legal notice in the window.
Nighclub Tiger Tiger also confirmed their closure in October, thanking everyone for ‘years of incredible memories’ on their website.
The club, based just off of Piccadilly Circus, is reportedly set to become a luxury hotel after operating at a loss for years.
Pubs, bars and newsagents have seen the largest overall drop in registrations and an increase in closures.
