OP Just Revealed Netflix’s Take on Mr. 3 Accidentally, And We’re Totally Obsessed

Season 2 of Netflix’s One Piece is still in development, but plenty of progress has already been made. Most of the principal cast members for season 2 have already been revealed, and filming is already underway, so people can expect season 2 to come out sometime in 2025 at the earliest.

Not much has been deliberately revealed about One Piece season 2, but they might have accidentally revealed more than they intended. One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda recently released a message detailing his recent experience supervising the production of the show in Cape Town, and a collage of behind-the-scenes shots from season 2 accompanied his message. Among those images, something especially notable is how One Piece has given a sneak preview of what to expect from the iconic Mr. 3 in live-action, and while there isn’t much to go on, it’s still great to see so early into season 2’s production.

The full appearance of David Dastmalchian as Mr. 3 has yet to be revealed, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to go on. Near the bottom of the aforementioned collage, there’s an image of some of the wigs used in season 2, and sure enough, there’s a wig of Mr. 3’s topknot in the shape of the number 3. It can only be seen from the back, but with the shape of the hair and how the wig even maintains the signature point, Netflix’s One Piece has perfectly translated Mr. 3’s hair from the anime and manga into live-action.

Why Netflix’s One Piece Is So Good

What little there is to see of Mr. 3’s hair in live-action is great, especially since it plays into the biggest reason the show has been a hit. Live-action anime adaptations have always been contentious for numerous reasons, and the biggest problem people commonly have with live-action anime adaptations is that they often abandon the writing and aesthetics of the original stories to tell something barely resembling the source material. Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, and especially Dragonball Evolution are guilty of this, and it’s a big part of why live-action anime have such a poor reputation with fans and critics.

In direct contrast to other live-action anime adaptations, the live-action One Piece series has always prided itself on sticking as close to the source material as possible, and with Mr. 3’s hair being a perfect match for how it looks in the anime and manga, Netflix’s One Piece continues to be a perfect translation of the anime and manga through the stellar appearance of Mr. 3’s hair. More pitch-perfect costume designs are undoubtedly in store for One Piece season 2, and if they’re as good as Mr. 3’s hair, they’ll all be great to see.
