“The Mystery Was The Key”: Jude Law Teases The True Identity Of His Star Wars Character & Deep-Cut Legends Origin

Jude Law has revealed brand-new details about his mysterious character in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, confirmed to be called Jod Na Nawood, in an interview with Screen Rant, raising questions about whether Nawood is really a Jedi after all. Skeleton Crew is the next to be released of Star Wars’ upcoming TV shows, and details about Skeleton Crew have been revealed sparingly. The show is confirmed to take place in the New Republic Era, but beyond its place in the Star Wars timeline and Nawood’s role helping a group of children who are lost in the galaxy, little is known.

Speaking to Joe Deckelmeier in an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Jude Law revealed that the element of mystery surrounding his Skeleton Crew character, Jod Na Nawood, was very intentional. Although Nawood had previously been thought to be a Jedi, Law explained:

“The mystery was the key. Knowing the scale of the universe now and therefore what it might be like to survive in that meant I could draw on all sorts of influences and inspirations. Obviously, the character himself has that potential because he’s slightly contradictory, duplicitous, and multi-faceted. He’s a survivor, but he’s clearly quick-witted and changeable.”

Law elaborated:

“The big question is: is he loyal? Is he a threat? What’s his intention? But what was wonderful was just being able to look at the canon and go, ‘Okay, if he’s that, then maybe he can remind people of this. If he’s that, maybe he can remind people of that.’ Drawing on all of that just meant it was like cherry-picking.”

Law’s description of Jod Na Nawood is certainly cryptic, but there are some hints about who this mystery character could be based on Law’s responses. Law’s references to canon and drawing inspiration from those stories suggest Nawood may be known (by another name) but not currently in canon—meaning he could be a Legends character.

Is It Possible Jod Na Nawood Isn’t A Jedi At All?

Star Wars previously dropped several hints that Jod Na Nawood is a Jedi. In the Skeleton Crew trailer, the children witness Nawood using the Force and conclude that he must be a Jedi. Of course, children who have perhaps never encountered a Force-user before and only know of the Jedi from stories might automatically assume that anyone able to use the Force is a Jedi.

What lent much more credence to the notion that Nawood is a Jedi were comments from Skeleton Crew co-creator and writer Christopher Ford, who said the intention was to introduce a ” whole new kind of Jedi.” This raised questions about what made Nawood so unique, but it heavily implied he was indeed a Jedi. Yet, Jude Law’s comments call this into question, as do other attributes of the character, such as the fact that his official action figure does not come with a lightsaber. It’s seeming more and more like Star Wars may have been misleading audiences about Nawood’s identity.

Jude Law is no stranger to concealing a character’s identity prior to a movie or TV show’s release, which suggests he’d have no problem hiding the truth about Jod Na Nawood if Star Wars is trying to deceive audiences until the time is right. In his interview, Law spoke about how he navigates this directly:

“You just learn to put up the iron curtain of ‘No comment,’ or let people fill the question or the curiosity, field it, and then there’s a certain smirk you have to develop. I go, ‘yeah, maybe. Maybe!'”

In addition to Skeleton Crew, Law had to employ this skill set when he played Yon-Rogg in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) Captain Marvel.

It will be truly exciting to find out what Star Wars has in store for audiences in Skeleton Crew. Star Wars has become increasingly experimental with its TV shows following the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
