Paul Scheer’s Twisters Cameo Explained

Paul Scheer’s Twisters cameo is unexpected, and while it was fun to see the actor make a small appearance in the film, the reason why he was in the movie is still a bit mysterious. Twisters is a legacy sequel to the 1996 hit Twister, and despite the two films being part of the same franchise, there are very few references to the original movie. No original Twister characters return in Twisters, which is why it is a bit strange that the film gave Paul Scheer a cameo and not anyone from the original cast.

Scheer is a comedian and actor who has appeared in some incredibly popular projects, such as Veep, Fresh Off the Boat, and Big City Greens. His most popular TV shows, however, are FX’s The League and Showtime’s Black Monday, both of which got Scheer even more notoriety in the TV comedy circuits. However, one of Scheer’s most popular contributions to the industry is his immensely popular podcast How Did This Get Made?, in which Scheer, Jason Mantzoukas, and June Diane Raphael discuss oddities from the filmographies of history.

Paul Scheer Plays An Airport Traffic Attendant In Twisters

He Appears At The End Of The Film

Paul Scheer appears near the end of Twisters, with him playing an airport traffic attendant. Scheer’s character has a small conflict with Glen Powell’s Twisters character Tyler Owens, with the attendant attempting to get Owens to move his car while he contemplates going after Kate Carter. Scheer’s interaction with Tyler is a fun comedic moment, allowing the actor to show off his talents in the brief cameo.

It’s not known how Scheer got his fun cameo in Twisters, although the actor will inevitably mention how he got involved in the project on one of his several podcasts someday. Scheer has no connection to the original movie, so he wasn’t brought back as a homage to Twister. Scheer did post a picture on Instagram showing off his character, although it doesn’t provide any further explanation as to why he is in the film.

Paul Scheer’s Twisters Cameo Is Random But Perfect

He Brings Life To This Small Comedic Character

Paul Scheer’s cameo in Twisters seemingly comes out of nowhere, with it being one of the most random additions to the film. However, it does work, with Scheer being a great addition to the cast of Twisters. Scheer brings life to this small character part, turning a bit role into a hilarious comedic performance.

Scheer’s cameo is made even funnier and stranger by the fact that it occurs in the final scene of the movie, with him stealing the spotlight from Twisters‘ main characters. While it was an odd decision to include Scheer in this fashion, it was a funny one, with him leaving his fingerprints on the world of Twisters.

Paul Scheer Told A Fun Lie About The Cameo That Everyone Believed

Scheer Claimed To Be A Legacy Character

While Paul Scheer’s Twisters cameo took many fans by surprise when watching the movie, Scheer himself added a little fun to his inclusion in the blockbuster. When attending the premiere for Twisters, Scheer was doing an interview on the red carpet in which he explained that he was actually a legacy character from the original Twister as he is the son of a background actor who was pregnant in the first movie (via X). The reveal got a lot of attention, with it being seen as a clever Twisters Easter egg that connected to the original movie.

However, the entire thing was a lie told by Scheer as a joke. Looking back on the claim, many people should have immediately realized that Scheer was having some fun with people as he would have been 20 years old when the first movie came out. The fact that people took the lie and ran with it makes Scheer’s cameo in Twisters all the more entertaining.

A follow-up to the 1996 original film Twister, Twisters is a sequel set years after the original, said to be fast-tracked by Steven Spielberg and Mark L. Smith, with Frank Marshal as producer. Little details exist about the film, but Helen Hunt is expected to reprise her role as Jo, with the film likely to pay homage to the late Bill Paxton.
