The Post Office is poised to axe more than 100 branches and some 1,000 jobs are at risk as a result.

The Post Office is planning to get rid of 115 directly-owned branches within its network of 11,500. The move could see the sites transferred to retail partners or postmasters, or even closed altogether.

On top of the Post Office staff at risk of losing their jobs, the company confirmed that hundreds more roles could go at its Headquarters, as it looks to reduce the amount of back-office staff.

Post Office chairman Nigel Railton said the cost-cutting would enable a “new deal for postmasters” by boosting their share of revenue and affording them a greater say in the running of their business.

However, it will come as a bitter blow to subpostmasters, as the firm tries to draw a line under the Horizon IT scandal, dramatised in a gripping ITV series, that saw hundreds wrongfully convicted.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has hit out at the decision, indicating that it will fight the proposed job cuts.

Writing on X, the CWU branded the closure announcements “outrageous and immoral”.
