London Underground station to close for 9 weeks

A busy London underground station is expected to stay closed for nine weekends as work begins on a major new development being constructed above.

The new 17-story development above Southwark Tube station will feature a mix of office spaces, retail shops, restaurants, and affordable workspaces, reports MyLondon.

Transport for London (TfL) also plans to add 429 student accommodation rooms and 40 affordable housing units, with the affordable homes located in a separate building next to the Jubilee line station.

The design of the new buildings aims to blend with the existing architecture and the character of nearby streets, such as Isabella Street, The Cut, and Joan Street, which will remain intact rather than being altered or built over.

Due to the construction, Southwark Underground Station will close each weekend from Friday nights to early Monday mornings for nine consecutive weeks.

This closure will start at 11 pm on Friday, November 22, with the station reopening at the start of service on Monday, November 25.

During these weekend closures, Jubilee line trains will skip the station entirely.

During the closures, Transport for London advises travellers to use Waterloo station, which is a 12 minute walk away according to Google.
