Cause of mystery pong at city’s bus station revealed after two weeks
A terrible stench has been plaguing people who use Leeds City Bus Station but the source of the unusual smell has finally been revealed.
The bus station has been plagued by the awful smell for two weeks now, with some people believing somebody died inside.
West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Babin spoke on BBC Radio Leeds and confirmed the pong was thanks to some spilt milk.
Commuters using the bus station were left crying over spilt milk over the last few days and compared the place to a cow farm or fish market.
Ms Brabin told the BBC: ‘We got to the source and dealt with it. Hopefully over the next few days that smell will disappear.
‘We know what that smells like in our own home,’ Ms Brabin said of the spilt milk, which was discovered inside a fridge in the building.
Some people, including a station staff member, said that they thought a dead body was in the bus station.
The person said: ‘It smells like something has died.’
Another person added: ‘The station shouldn’t smell like this, especially when it’s a major city station.’
She has now apologised to passengers using the bus station.
As West Yorkshire Mayor, Ms Babin is responsible for the management of the bus station.
Since the weekend, many people have been forced to hold their noses and run through the bus station because the smell has been so bad.
Groups of people were visibly overpowered by the smell despite it not being as pungent compared to at the weekend.
West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) also issued an apology and assured everybody that contractors are investigating the issue and a cleanup has been carried out.
A spokesperson said: ‘Contractors discovered the source of the smell which emanated from a tenant’s refrigeration unit.
‘Refrigeration engineers were on site on Monday and a clean-up took place.
‘Passenger services have been maintained throughout this period with no disruption.’
