Prosecutors consider charging Russell Brand over sexual assault claims

The allegations, which Brand has denied, date back to 2006-2013, during his time as a radio and television presenter.

British prosecutors are reviewing a file of evidence submitted by police concerning alleged sexual offences involving comedian Russell Brand, as they deliberate on whether to pursue charges against him.

“We have received a file from the police for consideration regarding a charging decision in this case. Any decision to charge will be made independently, based on the evidence and in accordance with our legal standards,” the Crown Prosecution Service announced late Saturday.

Detectives from London’s Metropolitan Police have conducted three interviews with the 49-year-old Brand in connection with “non-recent sexual offences.”

“Our investigation continues and a file has now been passed to the CPS,” said Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is heading up the investigation. “We have a team of dedicated officers providing specialist support to the women who have come forward. We are committed to investigating sexual offences, no matter how long ago they are alleged to have taken place.”

In September 2023, British media outlets Channel 4 and the Sunday Times reported claims from four women who allege they were sexually assaulted or raped by Brand between 2006 and 2013, during the height of his fame. The identities of the women have not been disclosed.

The comedian, author, and star of Get Him to the Greek has denied the allegations, asserting that his relationships were “always consensual”.

Brand is known for his provocative stand-up routines and has hosted various radio and television shows. He has also authored memoirs detailing his struggles with addiction and starred in several Hollywood films. Additionally, he was briefly married to pop star Katy Perry from 2010 to 2012.

In recent years, Brand has stepped back from mainstream media but has cultivated a significant online following through videos that blend wellness topics with conspiracy theories.

Brand is among the celebrities to have thrown his weight behind Donald Trump in the US presidential election.
