King Charles ‘soft boiled egg’ rumour put to bed by ex-royal butler

A former Royal butler who served Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles III, and Prince William for more than a decade has revealed the royal’s eating habits.

Grant Harrold, member of the Royal household, worked at the country Highgrove House in The Cotswolds serving both King Charles III and Queen Camilla, having even danced with the late Queen Elizabeth II.

He told Metro all about the royal’s odd eating habits and how they prefer their burgers cooked – and said King Charles is reportedly no stranger to a good pub meal.

For years, a rumour that King Charles enjoyed a boiled egg with every meal has persisted – even being mentioned in The Crown.

Mr Harrold has said the rumour is ‘nonsense’: ‘The soft boiled egg rumour – the royals do like eggs. Charles has chickens, so we’d have eggs often.

‘There was this story once that he would have so many eggs cooked for him, which is just nonsense. It’s quite silly.’

But Charles does enjoy some unusual foods, which he often tries while traveling abroad, Mr Harrold said.

‘The more unusual thing about Charles is that he loves mutton, which is very much a traditional thing. But he likes trying all sorts of things. He likes his beer as well,’ he said.

Charles reportedly likes a good pub meal as well, Mr Harrold said. He recalled going to the local pub on Fridays and having beers after his shift as a butler.

The young Prince Harry often made appearances with friends while enjoying pints and food.

Mr Harrold’s insight comes as Greene King conducts wider research into the nation’s burger-eating habits to celebrate the launch of its new from £10 beer and burger deal, available at 645 sites until 28th October.

If Charles were to order a burger, Mr Harrold speculated: ‘His mother used to like to have meat well done, but I’m not sure how he’d like his burger cooked.

‘He does like mutton, which is quite tough, so I’m guessing he’d go for more well done.’

As for William and Harry, the two princes would likely opt for their burgers cooked to medium rare.

But all of the royals would be using the knives and forks to eat their burgers, Mr Harrold said.

The royal butler added: ‘Using a knife and fork was certainly the technique employed by members of the monarchy during my tenure at both Buckingham Palace and Highgrove House, and by the numerous high-end clientele I have worked with worldwide over the years.’
