Vet shares five popular dog breeds that come with ‘lowest medical bills’

Lots of people love dogs – after all, they’re said to be man’s best friend.

Whether you want a little pooch for company, love a furry companion for your daily walks or are being pestered by your little one for a pet – there are all sorts of reasons why people opt to buy dogs.

But, it’s no secret that they’re expesnive. Between keeping them fed, watered and in good health – having a dog is by no means a cheap experience.

To help people out a vet has recently revealed which five dog breeds come with the lowest vet bills. Amir Anwary is a vet known for sharing essential pet advice on TikTok under the name @amirthevet.

His recent video got a lot of people talking as he revealed which pooches are the most budget-friendly to look after. It’s good advice, as it’s something you really need to think about before investing in a pet.

In the candid clip, Amir revealed the five dog breeds are:

  1. Jack Russell
  2. Greyhound
  3. Australian cattle dog
  4. Beagle
  5. Chihuahua

Jack Russells topped the list. They are generally a healthy and resilient breed. They have fewer genetic health problems compared to some other breeds, which can lead to fewer visits to the vet for serious issues.

In the same vein, Beagles tend to have a broad genetic base, which can reduce the prevalence of breed-specific hereditary diseases. They often have strong immune systems – and this genetic diversity often translates into fewer inherited health problems compared to more inbred breeds.

Jack Russells have high energy levels and active lifestyles, which contributes to maintaining good physical condition. Regular exercise helps keep their weight in check and prevents obesity-related health problems.

Similarly, Greyhounds are athletic and have a robust musculature, which often contributes to better overall health. This also tends to be the case for working cattle dogs.

Australian Cattle Dogs are known for their long lifespan, often living into their teens. While older dogs can face health issues, the breed’s overall longevity suggests they remain healthy for the majority of their lives.

Just like with Jack Russells, smaller breeds like Chihuahuas often have fewer complications related to joint and bone issues. These tend to be more common in larger breeds.

His advice got a lot of people talking, and the video has since been viewed thousands of times. Some were also quick to make jokes about Chihuahuas making the list.

One person replied: “Chihuahuas only because the vets boycotted working with them, so no bill.”

Some were surprised by the top five though, and shared some of their own experiences too. It seems somg dog owners have coughed up “thousands” to care for their pets.

One wrote: “Greyhounds? I can’t agree, they keep getting injured.” Another added: “Me with the chihuahua who’s cost me thousands.”

A third replied: “My dog’s half Jack Russell, half Australian cattle dog, and I can say medical bills are pretty non-existent. He’s the best dog in the world, and so smart.”

Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: “I have two Jack Russells – this is true.”
