BBC weather app forecasts 14,408mph winds and 404°C for UK this afternoon

BBC Weather app users woke up to some wild weather this morning – hurricane force winds and temperatures of 404°C.

Forecasters were left scrambling after ‘data issues’ shared the wild weather claims, including one with reports of 14,408mph winds.

Simon King, the lead BBC weather presenter, wrote on X: ‘Oops, don’t be alarmed by some of our weather data this morning.

‘Be assured there won’t be 14,408mph winds, hurricane force winds or overnight temperatures of 404°C.’

One social media user joked he thought he had woken up in Florida rather than the UK, as Hurricane Milton made landfall in the US.

Tim Bracey wrote: ‘It maybe seen as a joke (in poor taste) but we expect the BBC to provide correct information!’

BBC presenter Carol Kirkwood eventually addressed the forecast on air, telling viewers: ‘We’re having a technical glitch at the moment.

‘It’s showing wind speeds far too fast – in fact hurricane strength – and of course that is not the case at all so please do not be alarmed by that.

‘We are well aware of that and we are on it. We are trying to fix it right now, so hopefully that will sort itself.’

Previously the BBC weather glitched in summer as millions of people were told the UK would be plunged into a freak cold snap in the middle of July.

The ‘glitch’ saw temperatures of 7°C or 8°C forecast across Britain and Europe on the BBC Weather app and website.

Presenters failed to acknowledge the disparity with the actual forecasts – 16°C to 23°C with bursts of light rain – causing further confusion.

Baffled viewers took to social media to get to the bottom of what they were seeing.
