The Chelsea Detective season 2 brings more of the procedural crime-solving and unexpected murder cases that fans have come to expect from the British crime drama. There is no shortage of British cop shows on television and when The Chelsea Detective premiered in February 2023, it came into a fairly saturated market for similar shows. The Chelsea Detective managed to stand out among these series thanks to the starring performance of Adrian Scarborough as DI Max Arnold, the coffee-drinking, bicycle-riding detective who solves crimes in the upscale Chelsea borough of London.

The recent British crime drama may not be the most recognizable title, but it’s worth the watch. With two seasons of four episodes each, it’s an easy series to binge. Furthermore, there is no real overarching story. Of course, Max’s impending divorce from his wife Astrid (Annamaria Marinca) is a throughline, but there’s no big bad or villainous cabal. The Chelsea Detective is a true “murder-of-the-week” story that viewers can jump into at any point. The only information needed for season 2 is that Max is divorced, and he has a new police partner, DS Layla Walsh (Vanessa Emme).

In season 1, DI Max was partnered with DS Priya Shamise (Sonita Henry), a no-nonsense foil to Max’s grumpy but sweet investigator. Priya returned from maternity leave after only three months in season 1, episode 1, much to her coworkers’ surprise, and gets right to work.

However, she is absent in season 2, and The Chelsea Detective waves away the character by saying she took her family to live in Brighton, the seaside resort town in England. But the real reason the character left the show is that Sonita Henry wanted to pursue other career opportunities (via TellyVisions), including Black Cake, Surfside Girls, and a one-episode role on Apple TV+’s Silo.

Chris The Art Manager Has A Hand In His Own Murder

Chris Engineered A Break-In That Led To Toby Killing Him

In the first episode of The Chelsea Detective season 2, “The Blue Room”, Max and his new partner Layla investigate the mysterious and gruesome murder of an art gallery manager, Chris Milton-Elwes (Samuel Holmes), which also involves the theft of some particular paintings. The clues lead Max and Layla to a dead end and, even with Astrid’s help and knowledge of fine art, they don’t break the case. It’s only when Max notices the reflection of Chris’ husband, Greg’s (Tomiwa Edun) car in a photograph that proves he has been lying about his whereabouts, that the detectives get their answer.

Chris was dying from a brain tumor that gave him less than a year to live. As one of his final wishes, he wanted a few of the paintings in the gallery, painted by his great-grandfather, to be returned to his family. Astronomically priced, Chris hires Toby (Jack Ashton), a common thief who was present at the gallery the day of Chris’ murder and stuck out with his demeanor and accent, as he was not of the same class as the art gallery attendees.

His and Chris’ break-in goes wrong when Chris can’t help but mock Toby’s accent and lack of culture. In a rage, Toby attacks Chris and in the fracas, he accidentally stabs Chris with the tool he intended to use to cut the paintings out of their frames. It’s an open-and-shut case for the detectives after they arrest Toby.

Celia Swanson Is Murdered By Her Daughter Maria For The Inheritance

Maria Wants To Keep Her Mother’s South African Mining Money All To Herself

In season 2, episode 2, “Golden Years”, an elderly, wealthy woman named Celia Swanson (Sara Kestelman) is living at the posh Greyfriars West retirement home where she is later found dead. There are many suspects, including the staff of the home, and everyone who knew her well, considering Celia was killed by the forced overdose of diamorphine, medication for her progressive neurological disorder that only a few people would have had access to.

Max and Layla learn throughout their investigation that Celia’s wealth came from her husband’s involvement in South African diamond mines. This adds an extra layer of intrigue to the crime and widens the scope of who may have had a hand in her death, considering Apartheid in South Africa at the time of their mining operations. It also leaves Celia with few friends in either the group of suspects or at the police station.

Upon the discovery that Celia had a second secret daughter, Marieke (Christine Mackie), Max realizes her other daughter, Marie (Raquel Cassidy), must have killed Celia before she could change her will to include Marieke. Marie admits to her crime but appears remorseless, only concerned with the money she’s owed. It’s a sorry state of affairs, and the whole unsavory debacle regarding backstabbing family members, mines, and injustices leaves a bad taste in Max and Layla’s mouths.

Tony Donner Murders Iain After Suspecting Him Of A Terrible Crime

A Psychotherapist Is Murdered By His Patient

The Chelsea Detective season 2, episode 3, “The Reliable Witness”, involves the murder of a psychotherapist, Iain Frankland (Dominic Mafham), who has a history of employing unorthodox therapy techniques in his sessions, particularly when it comes to helping his patients overcome intimacy phobia. Iain is found bludgeoned to death in his office and the suspects include his many clients as well as a rival therapist, Charlotte (Claire Skinner), who may be interested in acquiring Iain’s clients.

After investigating several suspects, Max and Layla see footage of two of Iain’s patients, who should not know one another, hugging. They go to confront Tony (Bluey Robinson), a troubled young man, and find his apartment empty except for an SD card showing Iain in a compromising position with Daisy (Sophie Melville), one of Iain’s patients and the person Tony was hugging. Tony saw that Iain had sexually assaulted his friend and wanted revenge.

Like any good British murder mystery show, the cops are never totally certain that they’ve served justice just because they cracked the case.

He admits everything, including his love for Daisy, but Tony has to be taken away to jail. Max and Layla are unsure of the case after they close it. From their perspective and what they’d seen, Iain was clearly a dangerous man and Tony was a sympathetic actor, yet they had to arrest Tony and put him in prison. Like any good British murder mystery show, the cops are never totally certain that they’ve served justice just because they cracked the case.

Max Determines Caleb Killed Jack

Jack Is Murdered By His Brother When He Stops His Criminal Enterprise

In the final episode of The Chelsea Detective season 2, “A Crime of Passion”, Max and Layla investigate the murder of Jack Felton (Oli Higginson), who is found in his home with multiple stab wounds. The investigation leads the detectives to consider this a crime of passion since Jack is a well-known Lothario and many women were seen coming in and out of his home leading up to his murder. Perhaps a spurned lover decided to kill him.

As they investigate further, Max learns that many of the women Jack has been with hold him in high regard, and consider him a gentleman, making it unlikely they murdered the grocery store owner. Their fact-finding also leads them to another realization: Jack was not just a grocer, but a drug dealer as well. He had been selling cocaine and marijuana at the behest of his family, who enjoyed the wealth his dealing provided. Jack’s brother Caleb (Patrick Walshe McBride), a talented musician, enjoyed the music courses Jack’s money paid for.

When Jack announced he wanted to go clean, never mind the money, as he was sick of lying, Caleb went to confront him. Caleb can’t exactly remember what happened, but the evening ended with Caleb stabbing his brother to death. The final case of the season is closed and Max just has one more issue to deal with.

Max Finally Understands He And Astrid Are Not Getting Back Together

Astrid calls him out on this and sadly tells him it’s over between the pair.

Despite their divorce, Max is clearly not over his relationship with Astrid. Throughout the season, he makes romantic overtures to his ex-wife, trying to win her back. In the finale, Astrid calls him out on this and sadly tells him it’s over between the pair. She suggests he tries the dating apps, which just so happened to be how Jack met many of the women he dated in this episode. As the series closes, Max takes out his phone and begins swiping on a dating app, implying he’ll eventually find love after all.

The Real Meaning Of The Chelsea Detective Season 2 Ending

Passion Is Why Jack Died And What Max Is Searching For With Astrid

Passion is the theme of The Chelsea Detective season 2 finale. Layla and Max immediately assume Jack’s death must be a crime of passion, considering how many girlfriends he had, sometimes simultaneously. The real cause of the murder is still passion, but of a different sort, the kind between family members. Caleb saw Jack trying to go the straight-and-narrow and was upset with what he saw as a betrayal. Their fight was one of brotherly passion and was so intense Caleb doesn’t even remember it happening.

Max is also dealing with issues of passion. He has lost it. He originally had something with Astrid, but that’s long gone. All of The Chelsea Detective season 2, Max tries to pretend there’s still something simmering between the pair but there simply isn’t. It takes Astrid saying it to his face for him to finally believe it. Once he accepts that, he can give himself the chance to find a new passion, and maybe she will appear on a dating app.

How The Chelsea Detective Season 2 Ending Was Received

Season 2 Received Mixed Reviews Overall

While The Chelsea Detective isn’t exactly a cozy mystery series in the vein of Murder, She Wrote or Midsomer Murders, it does come close, which is what keeps people coming back for more. One plus of the show for a lot of viewers and critics is that it focuses on the dynamic between the investigating detectives and what’s going on in their lives rather than solely zeroing in on the mystery-of-the-week like so many procedurals do.

For season 2, Decider pointed out that the series didn’t stray too far from the first other than a new inspector joining the series. Their review of the second season pointed out that the mysteries in the second season, however, have become too complicated. They explained:

…we love the stories that are built around Max and whoever his partner is. But the mysteries themselves are somewhat confusing and are hard for mystery buffs like us to “play along” with, mainly because there is too much information that is hidden from the viewer until the last moments of the episode.

That idea seems to be the consensus among fans as well right up until the end of the season. That hasn’t stopped interest in more seasons of the show though. Luckily, The Chelsea Detective was renewed for a third season.
