A man was captured destroying a memorial in Brighton made to Israeli victims of October 7.

The ‘evil’ man, dressed in beige joggers and a black cap, threw signs and flowers left for those who died as stunned onlookers watched.

At one point, he threw teddy bears into a nearby tree before dumping out a planter that was left to honour the dead.

The man, who’s identity is currently unknown, only stopped when an onlooker yelled ‘Oi!’ at him.

A passerby then put himself between the old man until he left the area in Palmeria Square.

Sussex Police said they are aware of the incident and are treating it as a hate crime.

Detective Superintendent Ben Newman said: ‘Following a report to police on October 4, we were saddened to learn of this act of vandalism against a memorial that holds great significance for many people.

‘We understand the distress this may cause and we are treating this incident as a hate crime.

‘An investigation is underway, and if you have information to help us identify the person responsible, we ask you to contact police.’

A year on from October 7, memorial services are being held in Israel and across the world for those who died.

The mum of London-born Jake Marlowe, who died aged 26 at the Nova Festival, told the Express today: ‘I have been back here five times now to remember Jake and it does not get any easier. I feel close to him here though.

‘He called us at around 6.30 Israeli time telling us the rockets were flying above but he assured us he would be okay. We now know that he was not.

‘He told us he loved us and that he would be in touch. We called him back but we were getting no answer.

‘It was four days before we found out what had happened to him. He was missing for that long – and I miss him so much. This is absolutely horrendous, it’s beyond imagination.’
