A section of the M4 westbound remains closed this morning while investigations continue into a serious crash between a car and a lorry.

Traffic was stopped on the carriageway between Hungerford (Junction 14) and Swindon (Junction 15) in the early hours of this morning.

Wiltshire Police and air ambulance are both believed to remain in attendance at the scene.

Cars at the back of the queue in Wiltshire began to be turned around just before 4am, National Highways said.

The agency has outlined a diversion route for drivers on its website.

Delays on A1M while lorry recovered

Away from the M4, less severe delays are also reported on the A1M in Yorkshire.

One lane is closed northbound between Junction 36, near Warmsworth, and Junction 37, near Marr, in South Yorkshire.

An HGV is being recovered ‘following an earlier incident’, National Highways said – the nature of the incident is unclear at the moment.

Around three miles of congestion is expected, with 30 minutes of delays for drivers.
