81-year-old model takes part in Miss Universe Korea pageant
An 81-year-old model has taken part in a Miss Universe Korea pageant in an attempt to become the world’s oldest Miss Universe contestant.
Choi Soon-hwa strutted across the stage in a beaded white gown and performed in a singing contest at the Miss Universe Korea pageant at a hotel in South Korea’s capital Seoul on Monday.
She did not take the crown but was given the “best dresser” award.
Han Ariel, 22, won the contest and will compete in the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico City in November.
Ms Choi worked in hospital care before beginning a modelling career in her 70s.
She was announced as one of 32 Miss Universe Korea finalists earlier this month.
“Even at this age, I had the courage to grab on to an opportunity and take on a challenge,” Ms Choi told The Associated Press before the pageant.
“I want people to look at me and realise that you can live healthier and find joy in life when you find things you want to do and challenge yourself to achieve that dream.”

It was the first year Ms Choi was able to compete, as last year Miss Universe limited participation to women between 18 and 28.
The age limit was lifted this year to make the competition more modern and diverse.
The organisers of the Korean pageant also removed the swimsuit competition and eligibility requirements relating to education, height and foreign language abilities, in order to open the contest up to more women.
