Tony Khan Defends His Recent Tweet About Head-To-Head Battle With SmackDown – eWrestlingNews.com

UPDATE: We reported last night here on eWn that AEW President Tony Khan sent out a tweet regarding next week’s “Supersized” edition of WWE SmackDown going head-to-head with the first half of AEW Rampage.

Khan originally tweeted,

“I saw you’re doing a half hour head-to-head with us. I can’t wait to finally beat your main show head-to-head. It’s been a long time coming. See you next Friday for #AEWRampage on @AEWonTNT!”

When several fans criticized him for calling out WWE, Khan replied by saying it’s all in good fun and he welcomes good competition. He said,

“If I’m not sweating it, you shouldn’t be either. This is what sports are about, set a goal & try your best. We’ve got a great #AEWRampage card Friday + big Dynamite matches Saturday. I expect to do well, but regardless of next Friday’s stats, it’ll be a great weekend for the fans.”

Robbie Fox of Barstool Sports added,

“For my entire existence I’ve watched documentaries about how wrestling was at its peak when there was competition within major promotions, and now see people all butthurt about each and every aspect of “competition” between WWE and AEW. It’s very strange.”

Khan replied to Fox’s tweet, saying,

“Twitter’s the child of the boards/chat rooms that thrived during the 90s wrestling war; part of my business plan is recreating that competitive spirit while avoiding WCW’s errors, which is why I pace/don’t blow thru matches. @AEW has many years’ worth of big matches up my sleeve.”

When another fan brought up a comparison to Eric Bischoff challenging Vince McMahon, Khan replied with,

“Dude, people online were absolutely furious over that in 98. Eric already had crazy online heat before that too. I’ll never take it that far; I’ve never claimed I could physically best Vince, I just think AEW can put on a better wrestling show than them & I want people to know it.”

ORIGINAL: AEW President Tony Khan has taken notice of next week’s “Supersized” SmackDown event and took to Twitter to react.

As many of you know, AEW Rampage will be going head-to-head against WWE SmackDown for a brief period of time next week. This is due to SmackDown being moved to FS1 because of the MLB Playoffs airing on FOX next Friday night. WWE has announced that SmackDown will be two and a half hours long next week, meaning that the final 30 minutes of the show will air head-to-head against the first half of AEW Rampage on TNT.

Khan took to Twitter on Friday night and revealed that he “can’t wait to finally beat” WWE’s “main show head-to-head.”

Khan said,

“I saw you’re doing a half hour head-to-head with us. I can’t wait to finally beat your main show head-to-head. It’s been a long time coming. See you next Friday for #AEWRampage on @AEWonTNT!”

When a fan on Twitter replied to Tony’s tweet and told him to worry about his own show, he responded with the following,

“I already announced the #AEWRampage card for live next Friday, and it’s straight fire, chief.”

As we’ve been reporting here on eWn, AEW Rampage will be airing live from the James L. Knight Center in Miami, Florida next week. The following matches have been announced:

* CM Punk vs. Matt Sydal
* Ruby Soho vs. The Bunny
* Chris Jericho, Jake Hager & Sammy Guevara vs. Men of the Year & Junior Dos Santos

Due to SmackDown airing on FS1, WWE clearly knows they’ll be in for a battle next Friday night and have announced Brock Lesnar’s return and the following additional matches:

* Becky Lynch vs. Sasha Banks
* Sonya Deville vs. Naomi
* Sami Zayn vs. Finn Balor – King of the Ring Semifinal Match
* Carmella vs. Zelina Vega – Queen’s Crown Semifinal Match
