Dark Side of the Ring producers Evan Husney and Jason Eisener discussed the Season 3 premiere featuring the late Brian Pillman. Dark Side of the Ring airs on Thursday night’s on Vice TV. The show is also available on demand on Hulu.
Evan Husney talked about how he was able to get Steve Austin on the show:
“Well, it was a dream to be able to have him on the show. It was vital for the story, so we had to give it our best shot. Shout out to Jim Ross. I remember talking to him about this episode, and he was basically like, ‘I can’t see how you can do it without Steve. This feels like it’s not much of an episode without Steve.’ J.R., being such a great guy, and so supportive of the show, and we are so grateful to him, he was going to reach out for us to see, because obviously they go way back. I think it was like sometime last year, right in the beginning of production, I was chilling on the couch, watching TV. I look down at my phone and all of a sudden I get a text, and I’m on a text chain with Steve Austin and Jim Ross. There are a few mark out moments of the show, but that was like, wow, this is crazy. J.R. set it up. Steve texted me and it said I will call you tomorrow. The next day, he gave me a ring. We spoke. For me, I was such a huge Steve Austin fan growing up as a kid. We talked about Brian for about a half hour. He talked about the chain that he had. He talked about the show. He was as cool as can be. We started talking, and then by the end of the conversation, he said, ‘Yea, I’m in.’ I was like, wow, this is amazing. A few months later, when we were ready to do the interview, we came down to Los Angeles. I flew down for that. He was the coolest. He was amazing. When we did the interview, it was awesome. Afterwards, Jason and I hung out for an hour just bs’ing about the different folks that have been on our show and the stories.”
Talking about Brian Jr.’s involvement in this episode:
“Kudos to Brian Jr, who was the first person I ever reached out to for this episode. I picked up the phone and gave him a call. I remember meeting Brian Jr. at Starrcast. He was in the green room. I think Season 1 just aired. He said, ‘My family story would be a fit for your show’, or something like that. I said, ‘Give me your phone number.’ I took his phone number then, years ago. That’s how long it’s been sitting. I called him up. We talked. He was so down. He wanted to speak to his family, of course.
Kudos to Brian Jr, because, even though his relationship with his mother, Melanie, is complicated, very complicated as we saw on the episode, and so is everybody else’s relationship with her and all the different parts there, he knew that in order to do this story justice and to tell it right and authentically, you have to have everyone’s perspective, and it was important to bring everybody together. Brian Jr played a huge part getting everybody together to tell the story, and to provide support and comfort to all of them that needed it. That was amazing. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without that.”
